Hello, my name is Karl Stelly. I'm 62 years old, and I'm originally from Lafayette, Louisiana. I've lived in Baytown, Texas, Tulare, California, Great Falls, Montana, Killeen, Texas, Manassas, Virginia, and Louisville, Kentucky. I moved to Gettysburg with my wife about 10 years ago. I enjoy roaming the battlefield and photography, and studying the history of Gettysburg and the Civil War. I have quite a few photographs of Gettysburg and other Civil War battlefields and other historic sites posted on Google Earth. I use the name "Seven Stars" on Panoramio and Google Earth. If you see photos there by "Seven Stars," that's me!

Feel free to use any of the headstone or grave photographs I have taken for your genealogy work, projects, etc. There is no need to ask permission first. I have no problem with people using my photos on other websites. Just give me credit for taking the photos, is all I ask.

**** NEW !!!! ****

I have recently created Virtual Cemeteries for each individual State Plot in the Gettysburg National Cemetery. This enables people to have very handy listings of all the known burials within each State Plot at Gettysburg. I have also included a Virtual Cemetery for the United States Regulars buried in the National Cemetery (at least all the KNOWN ones). Enjoy!

RE: Father's grave
Hi Karl,
I guess the National Park Service is shortchanged on funds like so many other things and should the proposed budget pass, it will only be worse. Our veterans are surely neglected in life and after death but then there are people like you, going beyond, to remember them. Again a thanks.

RE: Father's grave
Hi Karl,
All I can say is at least they kept a Walmart off the battlefield. I read some years ago they tried to get one on a battlefield in VA! Why I won't shop Walmart!

Speaking of the Civil War, my mother lived in a house on Main St -don't know if it's called that, when she was a child. It was the Methodist parsonage then. It was the first private home to receive fire. She showed me the hole where the cannonball went through. It is pictured in the guidebook. ( I think it was a cannonball!)

Don't the military cemeteries come under the National Park Services? I know Gettysburg does. When we buried my mother I stopped by the ranger's desk to find where my father's grave was and the bright ranger asked if he fought in the Civil War! How old did she think I was!!

RE: Father's grave
Hi Karl,
My father's name was Kenneth Hamilton Cdr USN
I am shocked that Gettysburg of all places should be let rundown. I guess it goes along with the lack of veterans care in so many other areas. It is a disgrace. I would think with Gettysburg being a tourist area more would be done.

You are to be commended for all you do. I was particularly touched to see a flower for my mother by you. It was something I never did. A pink rose was her favorite. Odd, her side of the stone was cleaner. I guess it could be hers gets more sun?

Thanks for your reply and again for all you do.

RE: Father's grave
Again thank you for all the posts. He would be so pleased. He loved the Navy, was a judge on the military court of appeals handling court marshals.

Do they not clean the tombstones? I was shocked to see the moss/mold on his.

Samuel LeSage
Dear Mr. Stelly: I am researching soldiers of the 147th Regiment NYSV and am curious to learn where you found the DOD of September 3, 1863 for Samuel LeSage. All I have been able to locate is either July 1st or July 3rd. Thank you for whatever information you may be able to provide. Best wishes, Natalie J. Woodall, PhD
