Bio and Links
Bio Photo Hello everyone, my name is David. After more than 10 years as just "David," I decided to change my public name, as I am a perplexed historian. I may go back to David, but for now I am enjoying the change. I am a professor of history and have always loved to research my family history, and to pay tribute to my lost loved ones. Find A Grave is a great way to keep your family history alive. Please check out the memorials for my three departed grandparents. Marian Seymour (1915-2001) My beloved grandmother meant the world to me and I am glad she has this tribute, and My three grandfathers Harold Seymour (1913-1997), Raymond Dominic Stallone (1910-1993), and the man who was my closest grandfather my Opa Richard Shields (1930-2015). Also check out the tribute to my Great Aunt because I made her a promise she would never be forgotten Pauline Burke (1922-2003).

2015 was a year of great loss, it started with the death of my second favorite person on earth my grandmother's best friend
Mickey Robinson (1923-2015) and ended of the death of my grandfather my "Opa"Richard Shields (1930-2015). The presence of these people are associated with my happiest memories, please remember them. As well as their dear friend, Gretel Dzierla (1927-2012).

Please visit the memorial of my good friend Marilyn:
Marilyn Borden (1932-2009).

Please leave me a message if you want to contact me, I no longer will give out my personal e-mail as they are never positive e-mails only complaints. I cannot help on famous memorials I have added, but if you feel you are a relative of mine or you have info I am lacking in one of my memorials, please feel free to leave a message.

PLEASE DO NOT TAKE ANY OF MY PHOTOS AND POST THEM ON OTHER WEB PAGES LIKE ANCESTRY.COM WITHOUT PERMISSION. I HAVE SPENT YEARS FINDING THEM AND WOULD APPRECIATE IT IF YOU RESPECT MY WISHES. THANK YOU.

Elizabeth Patterson
I am a grand-niece of Mary Elizabeth Patterson, known as Aunt Mary to her family. We appreciate your creating the page at findagrave! I met her in 1963 (I was 11 years old), when my mother, Betsy Patterson Pace and her sister, Mildred F. Patterson took us from North Carolina on a marathon trip across the country to California to meet various relatives out there.

Our family, all descendants of Aunt Mary's father, my great-grandfather Edmund DeWitt Patterson, is planning a reunion in Redlands, California in the fall. I have been preparing the flyers and reminders that we are sending out to all the cousins, and the one for July will focus on Aunt Mary. I wanted to ask if I might use the photo of her as Mother Willoughby (the one with the top hat) in my flyer. Or, if you are not the original owner of this photo, perhaps you could point me to that person. I believe this picture is posted in a number of places online, but still wanted to check with you.

Thanks for your help.

Fredolf Hamlow
Thank you for your bio of Fred Hamlow. I found it while doing research for my father, who turns 90 next week. He survived teenage years locked in a TB sanitarium. You wrote that you hoped that one of Fred's students would see your page and remember him for the caring person he was. I want to tell you that I have shared the page with my father, who could be said to have been one of Fred's closest students. He lay in the bed with TB at Ahwahnee next to Fred when Fred died; they had a close friendship and Fred was probably the most meaningful mentor he ever had. He has a framed picture of Fred in his house (he has a few pictures of their time at Ahwahnee). Dad speaks fondly of the education that Fred gave him while he missed 3 years of high school. No library would lend their books to the TB patients, so my father's love of reaading is entirely attributable to Fred's lending his own books to him. No doubt that helped a great deal as Dad got better, went back for his senior year of high school, graduated, and went on to get a Masters in Social Work at U Cal Berkeley. He had a great career of public service (while at Ahwahnee he dedicated his life to helping kids who were institutionalized), became a great public speaker (both of which he attributed to Fred's mentorship), and leaves a legacy with his granddaughter heading a public health division in Illinois. I guess I have something to thank Fred for, as well. As my research is my father's day gift to Dad, as well as a birthday gift, I hope that you too share in the merit that Fred had. One should always remember that kindnesses can be conferred, even by the sick and dying, which have profound reverberations for society.

location of graves
Hi I am coming to California in a few weeks and am trying to locate some graves.
The graves for the most part have only a cemetery location but no section or grave marker info.

Can you assist me? Or point me to someone who is able to help?

Thanks

Fred Funk
Just wanted to let you know that I found the death certificate on Familysearch.org. Interestingly, it lists the cemetery as Roselawn and his parents as Frederick Funk & Myrtle Smith. Need to check some things out here at the local genealogy library to make sure the memorial is in the correct location.

RE: Fred funk
Does the death certificate list his parents? If I have the correct Fred Funk, I have seen his middle initial listed both ways. Where did you locate the DC? I can't for the life of me, find it online, and I do have Ancestry. I am not related at all. Just created the memorial from cemetery records. I do, though, enjoy a bit of mystery and sleuthing!! I always wonder what the story is beside a grave site that stands alone. I will have to check to see if he is buried next to other FUNK'S.

Dear Sir:

I recently received two edits from you for the above memorial located in Woodlawn Cemetery, Auburn IN. I could not locate documentation to support a DOB. Can you provide the source? I also believe that his middle initial is "R", and that his parents were Henry & Myrtle. Your opinion? Relation?

Known relationship?
Hello David,

I'm sending you this message since I noticed you have added a picture of mrs Ida Splain who lived in Nebraska 1892-1973.

That lady might be a cousin to my grandfather. My grandfather's father's four sibblings emigrated from Sweden to America in the late 1880's. Two of them came to Nebraska and Ida's mother may be one of them.

If Ida Splain is one of your relatives, or if you have more information about her or her relatives, I would really appreciate if you contacted me!

Best regards,
Thomas
