Grew up on the Lucas-Wayne County line, a descendant of families with deep roots in both. Educated at the University of Iowa, a U.S. Army veteran of Vietnam, also a veteran of many years of work for newspapers, primarily as an editor of one sort or another. Serve currently (2013) as president of the Lucas County Historical Society, member of the Chariton Historic Preservation Commission, board member of Chariton Area Chamber/Main Street and vestry member, St. Andrew's Episcopal Church.
