I grew up in the Northwestern area of Orange County, NC. next to the Alamance, Caswell county lines. I have a number of kin buried @ Mt Zion Church. Byrd's, Florence's|
I have a number of Shepherd Kin buried in Guilford & Alamance Counties.I am currently working on linking and providing information on as many as i can. I have set up a Virtual Cemetery for the Civil War Guilford- Alamance Shepherd's . One for those that died during the war and one for the survivors of the war. Total of 32. See my Virtual Cemeteries to view it. I will add names as i find them.
I have added a short clip on the 29 Shepherd Family members who served the Confederacy.
ATTENTION: If your looking for the Surname SHEPHERD, SHEPARD, SHEPPARD & SHEPHARD in Alamance or Guilford Counties, they can all be related. A German immigrant from Pennsylvania William Schaefer or Schaeffer settled in Guilford County in or before 1775 near what is now the Guilford-Alamance county line area. Early court clerks had a hard time spelling Schaefer so it was listed as Shaver in Census and early documents. His childern used the Shaver name, but most of their childern , the third generation started using the English version, SHEPHERD. Due to lack of schooling and early grave stone makers misspelling the name, and different census takers spelling it different it started to be spelled different ways. You can find the same family's with different spelling of Shepherd.
A number of the early Guilford Shepherd's moved to Illinois and Indiana in the 1830-1870 range to take advantage of the opening of land grants by the government. Because of a lack of names of the whole family living at a house in the 1830- 1840 census records its very hard to figure out which family members that moved and who their family members are.
At this time i am not transferring any of the Guilford- Alamance Shepherds.
I enjoy listing people i have known over the years . I Hope in someway this helps people find their relatives and friends. I will be glad to add pictures for you, just email the picture and info needed.

I was looking for Bonnie because in the obituary for Annie Bell Underwood Shepherd, (#11531727) Bonnie is listed as one of her children.
But your entry for Bonnie has her listed as the daughter of Walter and Lucy H. Shepherd.
Could Bonnie have been adopted by Annie and her husband, John Rankin Shepherd?? I noticed that both Walter and Lucy had died when Bonnie was very young. and Walter was one of John´s brothers.
Bonnie´s brother (or her cousin???) Albert Junius Shepherd was my ex-father-in-law.

We have discussed some information on him but not sure when I did this. I'm Anna K. Choate Otwell and I live in Guilford Co,Greensboro,NC.
I have received information from Mrs. Robbins and am really grateful you passed me on to her. Still cannot get his parents and siblings' names. I have some clues but not able to find how "Mack" is related to my GG grandmother, Theresa Ann Sheppard. In a letter from her husband, Elijah Franklin Hall who at that time was in VA with his confederate regiment, writes that he was sorry to hear that her mother had died and he was thinking that she would have been company while he was away. This was written in 1865.
If you want more information that I may have, you are welcome to contact me at my email address. firstname.lastname@example.org

Hello, I am researching my fathers side of the family, which is the Shepherd family. My great-grandfather James Murphy Shepherd is buried at Lows Lutheran Church in Guilford County, as well as my grandfather Berris Greeson Shepherd. I have a list of ancestors,(going back to the late 1700's) that my grandfather had written in the family bible. I wondered if this would be of any hep to you in your research. Thank You for the information that you shared about the origin of the SHEPHERD name. I remember my grandfather tell- ing me that it started out as VONSHAEFFENHEIMER in Germany, was shortened to SHAFFENHEIMER, then to SHAEFFERD, which became SHEPHERD.

I'm researching my maternal grandmother's family - Shepherd's from Alamance County. Just discovered your page here at findagrave and look forward to searching through the information you have. I am on ancestry.com and will be glad to share my information with you - but I bet you already know it! I think you have much more that will help me!
This grave is of my grandmother, Belva Shepherd Brook's great grandfather

As I was researching Velna Martha Shepard Hedrick I noticed that you gave the name of her father as William Henry Shepard. Actually his middle name was McKendry. The DC for Velna shows "Hindry" but this is incorrect. I am researching this family line and He was often called "Mack" and the McKendry has followed down through the Hall line. I cannot find his parents names, but My gg grandmother was (I believe his sister) and her name was Theresa Ann Shepard Hall. There is a Wesley D. Shepard that married Catherine Payton Reynolds that I believe his a brother to Wm. and Theresa. Thank you so much for the information on this site.

Thanks for the parental information for Lafayette Shepherd. The links have been made.
I really don't mind transfering most of them to you, except for a few that had direct ties to some of my family members---starting from John Rankin Shepherd and his wife, and working forward, up to the most recent of their direct descendants.
And I don't mind the ones that came before John Rankin Shepherd, even though they would be directly related also. But I do have some of them linked--except for some that were entered by other people who ignored my request to link them also.
Hope that made sense!!
