Bio and Links
Bio Photo I live in Independence, Missouri, the home town of President Harry S. Truman. I have deep familial roots in the cities of Independence and Lone Jack, along with Jackson County in general. I have family members buried in cemeteries throughout Jackson County and the metropolitan area. This is also the home city of the largest free standing genealogy library in the country and the World Headquarters for the Community of Christ (formerly RLDS).

My husband regenerated my interest in genealogy, and now it has taken over our lives ;) I am amazed at how we are all connected in some way. As of May 6, 2015 I have 8200 members on my family tree, which includes the direct lines and indirect lines of both my husband and me. I have spent about four years working on my records. So as a relatively new member to FAG, I am learning new things every day about genealogy, grave hunting, record keeping, and all the resources available for us.

I recently traveled to Kentucky, Tennessee, and the Carolinas to visit the cemeteries of several grandparents, including Henry Rice (6th GGF) and Hannah (Boone) Stewart-Pennington (7th GGM). I learned on that trip that two of my cousins have written books, one about their grandfather Marcellus Moss Rice and His Big Valley Kinsmen, and the other about Henry Rice, mentioned above. Both authors are my 2nd cousins, 4 times removed (they are first cousins to each other). It was a pleasure visiting the Museum of Appalachia, where my cousin John Rice Irwin is the founder, and has kept the spirit of our ancestors alive with his museum and artifacts of the region and his book about Marcellus. Thank you John :)

Through FAG, my 4th cousin, twice removed, contacted me. A few months ago we met for the first time at our wonderful genealogy library here in Independence. Our common ancestors were our 5th Great Grandparents James and Rebecca (Miller) Rice in Lost Creek, Tennessee, son to Henry Rice.

I have also met numerous other cousins, through the Dealy line, the infamous Boone line, and others.

Let me know if there is something I can do for you. That is what family is for.

The pictures I use come from a variety of sources. Some are personal photos, some are provided by other family members, some are from publications, and some are from other volunteers like us.

You are encouraged to ask permission before using any photos found here, or anywhere else, but my personal photos I will generally grant permission. Just send me an email if you would like to use a photo.

I believe by sharing the wealth of the ever-growing knowledge, we are rekindling the interests in our heritage. As much as we love technology, there was a lapse of a hundred years or so, where oral history and written records went to the wayside during the industrial revolution. Too many records were lost, as well as the interest of one's heritage. With technology's ease of access and evolving nature, we can reassemble our past, keep the spark burning brightly, and preserve our past for the future.

The family surnames I am most interested in researching are listed below. Most are direct, but some are cousins:

Rice/Rhys/Rees
Grayer/MacGrayer
Cottingham
Himes/Hymes
Frisbey/Frisbie/Frisbee
Congleton
Hazlett
Bellamy
Irwin/Erwin
Dalton
Lewis
Boone
Bennett
Lee
Dandridge
Tucker
Cave
Dealy/Daily
Snow
Whyte/White
Johnson
Allen
Myers

Spaid
Frye
Starry
Eckman

My husband's family surnames are:
Sexton
Thompson
Duncan
Yancey
Phillips
Thomas
Strunk
Chambers
West
Weigt
Harwood
Pennington

Thanks for reading and thank you to all the hardworking volunteers that make this site so a joy.

Stephanie Harris
James Lewis line
Hi Jana,
My name is Stephanie Plute Harris. We may or may not be related. My grandmother's line is Pierce, Lewis. My 5th great-grandfather is James Lewis, whose father is Robert Lewis, who fought in the Revolutionary War. I am researching to prove my connection for application to DAR. I found you here on Find A Grave. Just wanted to say 'hi.' By the way, I live in Independence, Kansas, about 3-4 hrs directly south of you, near the Oklahoma border.

Find A Grave Memorial# 11219372
Hi Jana, I have been researching the Boone line for some time. Trying to find the link to my family.
How is Nathaniel Lewis connected to the Daniel Boone line?

My family have a strong oral history of a link to Rev. John Boone, brother of Daniel Boone. I am every in the search for that link. My search has taken me far and wide. Today I stumbled upon your comment on this memorial.
Thank you,
Rosemary Paresa

PLEASE - could you remove from your memorial Laura Longworth (Find A Grave# 75001314) as John's wife.

As an ancestor, I can confirm Laura Longworth has married Virgil Longwoth #133404829. Both are buried side by side in Mound Cemetery, Jackson County, Missouri.

Thank you

George Fithen
Hey, Jana!
I didn't mean for you to transfer those memorials to me! I will take good care of them, maybe until one of their descendants comes forward. I really appreciate this -let me know if I can help you with anything in the Chicago area - I'm from St. Joseph, MO, but have lived near Chicago for a long time.
You don't have any Snows in Clay or Lafayette Co., MO, do you? My grandmother's aunt married John W. Snow and had two daughters in the 1880s - Rena and Gertrude.
Thanks so much!

George E. Fithen ll
Hi Jana,
These Fithens are my distant cousins, and with the repeated given name George Edward, it can get confusing! This George's parents were George Edward Fithen Jr (#117493959) and his mother was Adelma Miller Fithen (#117493994) I sent a relationship edit, but accidentally hit enter before adding Adelma's memorial #. George Edwin Fithen, another relative, was married to Rose C. DiOrio Fithen.
If I can help by providing records, I'll be happy to!
Thanks,
Susan
