Hi Cuz-in-law!
Shryl: I found the military pension filing for William L. Gates for his service in the Mexican War. Do you want me to add the document to his memorial? His memorial number is 156565793.

He was a Sgt, with the B4 Tenn. Volunteers, but served from Texas, I think.

Let me know, Cheers~ Shirleen

Z Gates name
Hi Shryl,
Thank you for all your hard work. I have a question about Z Gates' name. Mohon in Lamb and Allied Families states she was probably named Zerusha after a grandmother but you have different information. I am of her direct line and would love to learn how you came up with a different name. Again, thank you so much!!

RE: Photo Request for Elizabeth Gates #106212620
Hi Shryl, I uploaded the photo I took. I did wipe off what I could before I took the photo. I'm not sure if my photo is any better than yours. The old marker is beautiful but difficult to read. If you would prefer to leave yours, let me know and I'll be happy to delete mine.

Photo Request for Elizabeth Gates #106212620
Hi Shryl, I was at Newkirk Cemetery today taking photos. I was going to fulfil your photo request but I saw there's already a headstone photo for Elizabeth. I didn't know if you still wanted one--I have it if you do.

RE: Parmelia Gates
Seems slow - my husband's family didn't leave many records behind.

I also am responsible for keeping the records for a little local cemetery, and it has been an awful winter....so between my volunteer work and everybody getting sick, I'm really behind!

Thanks for your help on these Gates records! ~Shirleen

RE: 156562279
I'll check that out, Shryl....thanks. We lived in Yuma & Phoenix for awhile, then Flagstaff.

He still has kin in Avonville, but we are in Utah now. We spent 15 years in California on construction ...wish we were back there in the sunshine!

RE: 156562279
Thanks, Shryl - I believe he would be there at Red Bluff, with his family - but I have found no record. You probably know more about that part of the Gates lane than I do.

My husband is a grandson of James Norwood Gates 1895-1962. Along that direct line, they were kind of "backwoods" people, farming & living on remote ranches. We knew they were from Kentucky & Tennessee, but my husband was raised with little schooling and only knew his ancestors as "Granny" Gates and "Grandpa" Gates, so it has taken me a long time to search out official records instead of having very many family records to use.

His mother was a Bates from Beeville Texas. He used to squirrel hunt with his Grampa Bates around Del Rio & Honey Grove, but never kept track of family history. None of his ancestors are still alive.

I would like to add you as a friend, and if I find anything more, we'll keep in touch -
~Cheers, Shirleen
