I have been working on my own family tree since about the Fall of 1999. I started this project by doing transcripts of my own family's cemeteries and taking photos of the stones. I am sure this is how most folks get started doing this kind of thing.|
On my father's side, I am researching these names; Campbell, Clouse, Donalson, Edwards, Elam, Engle, Faris/Farris, Gillum/Gilliam, Harris, Hodge/Hodges, Hutton, Keck, Owsley and Riddle at this time. These surnames are from Virginia, Kentucky, Tennessee and Texas, with ties to England, Germany and Scotland.
On my mother's side, I am researching these names; Cantley, Clay, Gibbs, Rorrer/Rohrer and Turner at this time. These surnames are from Kentucky, Pennsylvania, Virginia and West Virginia, with ties to Switzerland, Germany and England.
You have my permission to use any photos posted here as long as it used for research and not for profit.

|Jane Ayres||RE: Ann Elizabeth Ayres|
Thank you for such a rapid response. I'll look for the correction.
|Jane Ayres||Ann Elizabeth Ayres|
#7940914 Athens Cemetery, Athens, Texas
I don't know if you are taking care of her page or not but your name shows that you maintain her sister, Laura Caroline Ayres Miller's page. You took over for "MB" who is deceased.
Will you add her parents to the page.

Thank you, and I will get back there soon to get photos of the one grave with the headstone and all the unmarked graves.
|James Clark||Permelia Engle birth and death dates|
The 1850 Census lists Permelia as being 24 years of age. [born 1826]
The 1870 Census lists Permelia as being 44 years of age. [born 1826]
The 1880 Census lists Permelia as being 55 years of age [born 1825]and her occupation is keeping house. The census lists her and both of her parents as being born in Kentucky.
The youngest children listed on the 1880 census was Permelia A. Engle, listed as Adopted. Efforts to locate a record of the adoption in Laurel, Knox or at the Kentucky Archives in Frankfort were unsuccessful. I have placed this child as the daughter of Elizabeth Engle, the daughter of Hiram Engle and Alsey Elliott. (Later confirmed via DNA)
During the 1900 Census, taken on 14 June 1900, John L. Harris and his wife Rachel and their family are living in Grays, Knox County, Kentucky. Rachel is the daughter of Permelia Ann Engle Hodge. On the census, the last person listed in the household was a 74 year old Widow born January 1826 in Kentucky. Her name on the census is Permelia Harris.
It appears the census taker made a mistake or was provided incorrect information in listing Permelia as the mother of John Harris when he should have listed her as the mother-in-law.
This date of birth is in line with the birth years listed in the 1850, 1870 and 1880 census and would make Permelia young enough to have given birth to her two youngest children, Daniel and James. Further review of census records and family trees disclosed the parents of John L. Harris to be William Harris and Mary Smith. This seems to confirms the Permelia Harris on this census is really Permelia Hodge. If so? Both the birth and death dates on Permelia's grave stone are incorrect. Her marker reads: Born 1822, Died June 25, 1894. I can understand a mistake on the birth date but not the death date.
Would appreciate your thoughts and comments.
|James Clark||George Engle, Sr.|
Ed, thanks for the response. I asked because of a letter in the Engle Book, wherein it was believed one of the tombstones in the Peter Engle graveyard bore the name of George Engle. I am currently trying to pinpoint the location of the Peter Engle graveyard.

Hi Ed, Do you know for sure that George Engle was buried tin the Church cemetery or is that your best guess?
ED, DO YOU BY ANY CHANCE LIVE CLOSE ENOUGH TO GET THIS INSCRIPTION AND POST IT TO THIS MEMORIAL. I HAVE ALSO ASK THE PERSON WHO POSTED THE PIC
|sue cobb||Joseph Warren Russell|
Do you have proof he was here in 1845 when Texas was a Repbulic?
Also, do you have a picture of the grave where his daughter , Nancy was buried? and a date?
