Bio and Links
Bio Photo I started working on my Family Tree when I was just ten years old. My mother's sister got me started, I think today she would be arrested for child endangerment. I was the only 10 year old in my neighborhood with a five drawer government issued gray filing cabinet filled with files of birth, marriage and death certificates, census reports and Civil War pension files. By high school I was skipping school to take the Metro bus into downtown Washington, DC to go to the National Archives to spend the day in a room filled with big gray manually operated microfilm machines scanning census reports one page at a time looking for my ancestors. We're talking the mid 70s, before indexes, computers, Family Tree Maker or Ancestry.com.

I split my time between my homes in Los Angeles, California and Deposit, New York so I can do my historical and genealogical research.

I am very thankful for Find A Grave, all your entries have helped me greatly. I research not only my line but all the siblings of my line. As a British lady friend of mine so aptly put it, "you're not doing your family tree darling, you're doing the whole bloody forest!"

When I create a memorial, I research the individual and write a biography for them. Even when I am "doing the whole bloody cemetery!"

Feel free to use my photographs, but it is nice to be credited for photos as I have put a lot of work into them. Unlike some photo contributors who take pictures of moss covered stones or grass or plants blocking the vital information we are all searching for; if necessary, I clean the stones, trim around them and if it is a veteran's grave and there is no flag there I place one there before photographing the grave.

If I have made any errors in their history or have any typographical error, please let me know and I will gladly correct them. I am sure I have OCD and mistakes really bother me.

RE: Minnie Carson
Since you also know relatives with a closer link then I, on Family Tree with the information I gave you is an unconfirmed photograph for John Ross Sterling. Is it possible to have their descendants look at it and confirm? Perhaps they were always the contributor...lol.

Always, Donna

RE: Minnie Carson
Mary A Wood is Marie Alenna Skinner Wood and that is my ancestor. Her first marriage was to Wood then to Sterling, then to Kuehl. Her daughter Iva Peal Wood at the age of 19 married 47 year old Frederick F Dobney, a railroad man. At the time their child was two months old and they were seperated, he in a rage shot and killed Marie Alenna Skinner Wood, shot his wife Iva Pearl Wood Dobney who ended up surviving, put bullets through the cap of another child of Marie Alenna Skinner and then committed suicide. A complicated mess.

In trying to complete Mary Lena/Marie Alenna Skinners line, I have had to delve deeply into the Sterling line. ANother relative of LeRoy Stirling contacted me and I am attaching the note I sent to them. Perhaps you will be able to add information as well.

Dear Jo,

On which site have you noticed my work? Find A Grave or Family Search?

I am related to Marie Alenna Skinner. In the process of working her line I am trying to straighten out the Sterling lines. Of course there are always inconsistencies. One of the big ones I am working on is as follows and perhaps you would have information that can help.

John Ross Sterling married Marie Alenna and I have that documented pretty succesfully.

His first wife was Minnie Etta WIlday 1881 to 1961:

THey had four children: LeRoy, Lawrence, Ethel M, and Alton J. There have been some sites/private records that state Alton J is aka David Arthur Sterling.

I have found a marriage document that disputes the last information and shows David Arthur Sterling as a child of Minnie Wilday and Stephen Sterling. My thoughts are that perhaps Steven was a sibling of John Ross Sterling, (then he died and John married her), but have not been able yet to identify all four of William A Sterling and Elizabeth Stevenson (Stevens) children. The 1910 Census stated four children birthed and three children living. THen my next thought was perhaps it was an Uncle. When I explored the family of John M Sterling and Mrs Margaret Sterling I could not find a Steven. Related to David there was one document that said the father was George Stirling, George Steven Sterling?

In the 1910 Census I found LeRoy, Lawrence, Ethel and Alton living with the Stirling Grandparents. Any help or clues that I can dig deeper with would be helpful. I have put in about 40 hours this week on this line and have made progress, but as always there are gaps.

If you do not have a a family search account you can go there for free and I can give you the identifiers for LeRoys parents and you can explore from there. You may find some information that can be of use. I have tried to document my explorations thoroughly.

RE: Minnie Carson
Dear John,

I am related to Minnie through her husband John Ross Sterling-his first wife Marie Alenna Skinner who died a tragic death.

I have an obituary that lists the birthdate. I meedietely noted the difference from the record and attempted to find a primary source that supported the February date, and did not have it. Not even a Social Security Death Index, at least under the name of Minnie Carson. The obituary was in "The Oneonta Star
(Oneonta, New York)
15 Apr 1961, Sat Page 10."

I have no way of attaching it to this email, if you send a traditional one I can forward to you.Or I can upload it to the actual Find A Grave Memorial. If you would like me to remove it after you evaluate it please let me know. I know many documents can have misinformation. Do you have a primary source document birth/death record that you could upload? I have yet to find one online.

Thank you for protecting the integrity of your ancestors information.

Always, Donna

North Afton Cemetery Book
Johnny, I am very happy to share with the news of a book that was just published containing information about your family. Julia, Hiram as well as Capt Ransom MacDonald are mentioned. As a matter the same photo you posted for Hiram Fuller is included in the book. Capt Ransom MacDonald has about an two pages written about him. The name of the book is "NORTH AFTON CEMETERY Afton, Chenango County, New York." It is written by Sharon M. Donahoe, published in 2017. The woman who wrote the book is having a presentation this week in Bainbridge, NY about it. I bought the book this week on Wednesday at the Afton Museum. I saw the book being sold on ebay as well.

RE: Duplicate listing
Hi Johnny, you are very welcome for the photos!!!
I was just there yesterday, I walked right by Capt Ransom MacDonald's memorial but did not take a photograph as he was not on my list. But do not worry, I will go back next week and get his photograph for you. I am happy to hear you have sent messages out in regards to the duplicate listings. I hope the problem is addressed. Please let me know if I can further assist you with any other family members at North Afton Cemetery. ~Laila

Duplicate listing
Hi, I am the person who today filled the photo request for both Julia and Hiram Fuller. When I went to upload the photo of their memorial I noticed that both Julia and Hiram were listed twice for the cemetery. I decided to add my photograph to the Hiram Fuller that had a photo of him already uploaded on his page. For Julia, I only added my photograph of her memorial to the original listing that was first created for her. There is also a discrepancy on Hiram's date of birth and death. For Julia, there is a discrepancy on her year of death. When I say discrepancy I mean that the memorial's years do not match what was written for their dates when they were both added to findagrave. Please let me know if I can assist you with anyone else at North Afton Cemetery. ~Laila

Madora S. Scofield Beilby
I have Madora's obit from 1995.
Her first husband was Leon Van Valkenburg who died in 1951. Her second husband was Fred Scott who died in 1964. Her 3 husband being Glenn Beilby who died in 1977.
I have heard the same story about the number of marriages but have not been able to confirm but the 3.
Her obit is quite lengthy. I also confirmed her obit with Zacharias.
