I have deferred to Neil's entry. My entry was made from a photo of an old marble stone while Neil has access to many more documents that are "local" to him. Thank you for the notice.

Thanks for checking.

You are ABSOLUTELY correct!
I relied on another person's research - and when I received your email - I did further digging. It was a challenge to find Sophia - because - as it turned out - she had remarried and was living in Mt. Carmel.
I've sent new links.
Thanks for your help.

Hi, I wonder if you live near this cemetery. The headstone is very hard to read. The Herring stone is much easier to read. If you do live close to this cemetery, I wonder if you could go and take another try at the headstone. I use a little flour to fill in the holes of the inscription. I can make out 1757 which is his birth year, but I can make out nothing else. When I use flour I use a makeup brush and a light touch. Then after the picture(s) is finished, I use the same brush and and harder touch to get the excess flour off the stone. These stones are so old, we need to catch everything that is on the stone while we can. I really appreciate your help on this. If you do not live nearby, please let me know that, and I will post a formal picture request. Since you have been there, I figure it will be easier for you to find it than someone else for the first time. Thanks for your consideration. Jan

According to his death certificate, Lazarus Schappel was the son of Daniel Schappel, Memorial Nol 46985853, and his wife Maria who are also buried at the Mertztown Cemetery. This is also confirmed in Berks County Deed Book 234 page 681, where it says that the survivors of Daniel Schappel were his wife Maria, and 3 children, Llewellyn, Catherine wife of Alvin Fegley, and Lazarus. In this deed the children Llewellyn and Catherine sign their 2/3 interest over to Lazarus.

Happy new year,

Thanks for checking. I will keep researching documents until I find something definitive.

I am trying to determine the parents of John H Pape's spouse, Hazel G Pape. Find A Grave memorial #87296615. I have determined from their marriage certificate that her maiden name was Brown. There are only two other Browns buried in this cemetery: Morris Find A Grave memorial#8902447 and Jennie Brown Find A Grave memorial#89024436. As you took all of their headstone photos, do you remember if the Browns's resting place is close to the Papes and/or were there any other markers that may determine whether or not they are Hazel's parents?
