|Bio and Links|
Former volunteer & board member of Montgomery's first cemetery authority. I have spent the last nine years walking, photographing & transcribing cemeteries, seeking out information & descendants while making friends along the way. In particular Cemetery Sue Armstrong who was documenting cemeteries long before it was cool, the Cemetery Czar & many others. Their love, support, encouragement & knowledge fuels my own love for cemetery preservation and to continue documenting graves as long as I am able. |
The Story of her Missing Marker
Mary Louisa Portis
The recovery & return of this newborn's marble ledger will always be the highest point in my preservation efforts. LeeAnne Wofford, Deputy State Historic Preservation Officer at the Alabama Historical Commission, whom I am privileged to call my friend, provided me with this rubbing before it was removed from Lincoln Cemetery & taken into their custody for safe keeping.
If you wish to use mine please just ask. For me personally, it is about respect & courtesy for the person who took the shot not about admiration. If I ever neglect to thank a photo volunteer let me say here how much I appreciate those who beat the bushes photographing markers on my behalf. Bless you all, you make it possible for me to visit places I might not ever get to. 📸
BIOS AND EDITS
Take the time to assemble information from records into paragraph form no matter how short. Be concise & factual in your s.a.c.'s. Do not leave biographical information in virtual flowers which will be reported when found. Graphic details will be declined. I don't have time to fact check every correction received, please don't assume I am the source of erroneous information! I am not perfect, even after twenty-five years of genealogical research I can & do make mistakes. Not once have I ever claimed perfection in regards to this website or genealogy.
I am not totally against out of guideline transfers but management of all your family just isn't possible. Virtual cemeteries are a great option to keep track of family or surnames that pique your interest. Ancestry's acquisition of Find A Grave has not negated it's primary purpose which is documentation of final deposition of remains. It is a collaboration of two excellent resources for genealogical research.
A Final Word
I have dealt with some really nice and some not so nice people over the years. Anyone who resorts to name calling or any other bad behavior will be blocked from emailing me & I will gladly explain why I don't respond to those contributors. I am not trying to be mean or contentious but as far as I know it isn't possible to stalk the dead or cemeteries.
