Stories of my Illinois ancestors were shared with me by my great grandmother Grace Ellen Smith Scanlon at an early age and this sparked a deep interest in genealogy and learning more about my heritage. After many years of library and Internet research I decided to visit the areas where my Smith, Rowland, and Wilkerson ancestors once lived. I've now made several trips to Illinois, and over the course of these visits have developed an interest in documenting cemeteries. My main focus is on abandoned family farm and small community cemeteries that are difficult to locate and are in the greatest need of being recorded. I continue to research at home and assist others on the Historical Society of Montgomery County, Illinois website. I've also traveled to Otsego County, New York and Pittsylvania County, Virginia to research my other family lines and perform cemetery readings. |
My experiences visiting and documenting abandoned cemeteries in Illinois ultimately led me to return to school and earn a master's degree in archaeology. As part of my master's thesis I researched how the victims of the St. Francis Dam disaster have been memorialized. I am thankful for my many fellow find-a-gravers across the U.S.A. who helped me locate and photograph the grave of each flood victim so they are not forgotten. This research continues. Join our discussions in the FB group "St. Francis Dam Archaeology".
I do my best to provide complete and accurate information in all my postings. Corrections are encouraged! I will gladly transfer memorials to family and I am happy share my photographs, but please give proper credit: "Ann Stoddard, Find A Grave #46964942". If I have offended anyone by adding their loved ones to the site please let me know and I will promptly remove the memorial.

Memorial #626187 Fort Rosecrans Cemetery, San Diego.
I noticed you have posted pictures to my mothers memorial and I would like to tell you that you have mistakenly attached a photo to her site for a person named: Loren Franklin Salter. My mothers husband is William Francis Enyeart - who is still alive today. Also, someone has added the information "TEC 5, US Army". My stepfather served in the US Navy.
Hopefully, you will be able to correct this for me.
Sincerely, Lynn Wonsetler

Hi Ann and thanks for the heads up regarding Cass Cemetery. And a big thank you to you for getting in there when you did and taking those photos...so precious to have. I had found Hannah's husband buried in Cincinnati and sent my uncle to visit the cemetery. He came back and said no Hannah there. Then I found your Find A Grave memorial for Hannah! She must have been visiting her daughter and son on a farm near Raymond when she died and they just buried her there.
I was just at Wares Grove Cemetery...beautiful...and very close to Cass. I'll work on it.

Thank you Ann... much appreciated.
I would like to visit this cemetery and find her grave. Could you tell me how you got there. Is there a board member or sexton for this cemetery? I understand it's located on private property.

Thanks for all you do on Find A Grave & your research. I'm trying to find out Mary Ann Thompson Creecy parents names & other info. William & Mary Ann's daughter Eliza Jane Creecy Lowe is a relative. Would it be possible to find Mary Ann's obit Feb 1884 in the Raymond Independent newspaper? OR William & Mary Ann's marriage record? It seems that Marjorie Bailey found this info; do you work with Marjorie on this? I live in north central Wisconsin & it is very difficult to find someone who is in Montgomery County, IL that could assist with this. My direct email is: email@example.com
Thanks for any help & I'm willing to do lookups for you here in Wisconsin.
