Bio Photo Please use the SAC function (edit button on memorial) to request transfers, and be sure to let me know specifically how you are related.

I volunteer at Oakland Cemetery in Atlanta, and am working on photo-documenting the whole cemetery. At this point, I prefer not to transfer memorials for this cemetery (other than mandatory transfers, of course) because my research is ongoing. In the meantime, please feel free to send me as much additional info as you wish via the edit button on the memorial.

NOTE: Obituaries are a wonderful source of information, but findagrave has rules about how they may be used. You can always glean facts from them for the bio. If they are out of copyright, or if you hold the copyright, you can transcribe them. Regardless of who has the copyright, you are not supposed to post them as a photograph - regardless of whether you scanned it, took a screen shot, or downloaded it from another website. Please feel free to send me obit text via the edit function, and I will use the info to add to the bio. Obits posted as photos will be removed, and it just ends up wasting your time.

RE: Marcus Smith
Marcus Smith was my gg grandfather. His full name was Marcus De Lafayette Smith, he married Mary Puckett, she drew a Confederate widow pension. Marcus died from measles at the Empire House Hospital in Atlanta.

William Smith, his father married Meredy Gamage in Coweta County in 1835, said to be his second wife. In 1837 they had twins, Marcus and Elvira. Elvira's full name Elvira Jackson Smith, (Andrew Jackson was president at that time).

William was 86 years old, however his wife was just 37 years old. William must have enjoyed good health, he lived to be 101.

The Oct.12,1880 issue of The Newnan Herald, a Newnan Georgia newspaper tells of the death of Elvira Smith, daughter of William "Hell Nation" Smith and Meredy Smith.

In the book "The Georgia Frontier", by Jeannette Holland Austin there is information on William Smith, his widow Meredy and children Lafayette and Elvira.

This is the documentation I have discovered so far. I think it is strong proof of the relationship between Marcus and William. The Confederate marker for Marcus in Oakland was placed there by me in the late 1980's. The marker before this one was inscribed "D.F. Smith". My grandfather always told me that he went by that name "D.F."

Hope this info helps.

RE: J. J. Richards
1st Richards interment reference (first wife) is in a cache of HATHAWAY documents, letters, photos owned by descendant in AZ; I'll try to get it. JJR/SMH had three children; 1st died in Athens 1849 before Oakland established, 2nd died in NYC in 1853 (mentioned in same line as mother's interment). 3rd child (Annie Hathaway [Richards] LIVELY) survived; buried in Westview Cemetery with husband, child. No greater impetus for plot purchase than child mortality, so IF you have purchase records, JJR would have purchased Section 8, Lot 427 abt. 1853-1859. Only you would know if this fits interment patterns there or if this is in error. I do see many Richards child mortalities you manage so they are clues as to whom, etc. Do give consideration to enhanced transcripts by you or those transcribing your photos. In the new F-A-G format preview, transcripts take center stage and photos back because they increase advertising reach for F-A-G. The owners of the only two Hathaway caches of docs I know of found me by F-A=-G, not Ancestry, etc. So I'm sure there are lots of docs re: Oakland in attics out there and it takes strategic text leads to scare them out in Google scans.

Hope this helped.

RE: J. J. Richards
No problem - accuracy is a worthy goal we share. But I don't understand "willing to" as you manage these memorials (which are not records but I assume you have access to the actual cem records). As a 30 year Hathaway researcher, I merely corrected one whose dates seemed by your own stated admission in bio to be census supposition (not cem record derived, i.e not documented or "what Oakland has recorded"). His first wife is extremely well documented, especially via Hathaway and Stoddard genealogies. In fact all his five wives' marriages/deaths are extremely well documented and nothing I sent you previously was incorrect. The "Mrs. J.J. Richards" marriage linked in 1872 was established by someone else and wishing to also link her parents, it would not let me overide the incorrect year, apparently.

Here's my prior note with wives' names now in caps but since you also declined my Hathaway transcriptions last week, I cannot assume that my Hathaway desires beyond accuracy (max google reach in text searches for all things Hathaway) will meet your needs so she has a new memorial based on what I know is documented. I'm happy to consider removing it if what you had previously in one of yours is updated to reflect what is, again, known via Hathaway records regarding her interment. It's great you are taking on an entire cemetery and can comp aginst the cem records - great. As you know, cemetery records, let alone transcriptions, aren't always the best place to derive the facts. Takes many pieces. . . . the more Google reaches, the greater potential access to deeply hidden fact sources (family letters) beyond your Oakland Cem records and my genealogies of a century ago. My goal is to scare out those family letters of long ago by increased search exposure.

Here you go, now with names in [ ]:

"True - J.J. Richards was not married in either 1860 or 1870, yet was married 5 times. I know from my Hathaway family records that first wife [Sarah Maria Hathaway] died 07 Jul 1859 (married 26 Dec 1846), 2nd [Stella L. Wheeler] died 13 Feb 1863 (married 16 Jun 1860), 3rd [Louisa V. Soullard] died 31 Dec 1869 (married 19 Dec 1864), 4th [Martelia Martha Griffin] died 23 Oct 1873 (married 05 Jan 1872), 5th [Julia Frances Clarke] died 05 Feb 1885 (married 08 Sep 1874). I know for a fact that my Hathaway ancestor was the first interment in the Richards plot so have made corrections and links here accordingly since your dates for this memorial are supposition recognizing that only the married name is in cemetery records. You are going to find that all the families for all these wives have them exactly."

If some of the wives aren't here, they may be with family. As you realign these, I'll add facts if I have them.

Most all the Hathaways in 19th C. Georgia are related and from Hudson, NY - and fought for both sides (if fought at all).

Hope this helped, Philip in NYC

Photo permission
May I have permission to use your photo of Peter Bruner's gravestone for a book I'm finishing up about black people from Clark County, Kentucky? Of course, I would credit you as the photographer.

Thanks very much for considering my request.
