Bio and Links
I have been a student of my family history since my childhood when I listened to my Grandmother tell family stories. This continued with genealogical trips with my mother, and I continued the tradition with my children. My family has tended to stay in the Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia and West Virginia area.
I'm always eager to meet "new" cousins.

Long lost cousin
We are related through the Woodwards as they are our common grandparents.

I was just telling another contributor that the gravestones can also have errors on them. I have seen people erecting newer stones to reflect what they want to believe (or that is what it seems) or posting on-line their family trees with the wrong people as their family line. When you have conflicting information from reliable sources, it is hard to decide which is the correct one. I am not really blood related with this particular individual but the name does appear on my family tree which is why I was researching it and noticed the difference. Thanks for replying.

Mary Miller, wife of Emanuel Miller
On the gravestone erected by I am assuming the family of Ann Miller Kendig, it has her parents names as Emanuel (1794-1864) and Mary Kohrer (1791-1864) Miller. How do you get Resh as her maiden name?

RE: Christiana Middlekauff
Yes, my 3x great grandmother on my maternal side was Mary Ann Middlekauff (1802-1883). She was b. in Fairplay, Washington, MD & d. in Keedysville, Washington, MD. Her Find A Grave #51930434. She married John Jay "Jack" Keedy (1805-1868) in 1826. Her parents were Christian Middlekauff (1769-1828) & Rosanna Russell (1772-1832).
I believe they are all linked up on Find A Grave, if you are interested.
Getting back to Christiana, have you searched for the possibility of her having married again after Samuel died?
Happy hunting & Merry Christmas,

Christiana Middlekauff
Hi Mary,
Glad your wrote, it's always good to check things out. I think I may have come up with some explanation of the confusion of Christiana's maiden name.

I've been searching all the trees that pop up when you click on the leaf to see how they dealt with her maiden name.
I was thinking that all those different "B" surnames were enough alike that the person writing the documents just heard the name differently & so they spelled it the way they heard it. I thought maybe she had married again, but that didn't seem to fit either.

Just now, I looked for her on Ancestry in the 1850 Census. She was listed in the family of Wm S Bantz (1818) & wife Carline Bantz (1819) & their children: Wm A, 7 yrs old; Henry H, 6 yrs old; Mary W, 4 yrs old, & Clarence, less than a month. Catherine Cole was 17 yrs old & I would guess that she was working as a "maid", "child care", or "servant". It says she was born in Germany, home in 1850 Frederick, Frederick, MD.

There was a Christiana Cole age 17 b. abt 1833 living with Henry Cole, age 62 & Ann Cole age 60; & a Timothy Tyler age 86, & John White age 17 living in Lexington, Greene, NY. It didn't give where she or Henry & Ann where born. This was also the 1850 Census.

There was another Catherine Cole in Frederick, Frederick, MD, also b. in Germany & she was b. about 1834. Her parents were John Cole & Sarah Cole.

I just went to the Public Trees on Ancestry & there are 3 that have her married to Samuel M. Middlekauff, but they don't have her parents.

I just checked the 1840 Census for Cole(s) in Frederick Co., MD & there were four families there. However, when you look at their census page only one had a free white female 5 through 9. That family was Thomas C Cole's living in New Market, Frederick, MD.

What it comes down to is, I think her maiden name was actually Cole, but you can't be sure who her parents were. And I'm guessing she was the Catherine/Christiana Cole living with the Bantz family in the 1850 Census. Why she would go by that name when her name was recorded on those death certificates is anybodies guess.

Edit for Washington L. Gill
Would you kindly share your source for the middle name?

Am I missing something? I looked up all the Margaret Laws on Find A Grave and none of them are mine. Donna
