I know not how to light the path of the future, but by the lamp of the past. P.Henry|
One should appreciate, or even study the past. It will always be there and grows larger every day. The study of time can be abstract. It does not need to be quantified or even orderly. Because it is all-encompassing, there is something for everyone. G.Seitz
I had added some whiny drivel here about the site removing photographs for months. Well, on March 23rd 537 of them magically reappeared. I confess not understanding and being well on the way to not caring. But that is not my nature.
My home is circa 1784. Its situation is such that it fell in the line of battle during the conflict between the States. When my father died, I was too early at the cemetery for the appointment concerning the necessary arrangements. To pass the time I paid a visit to the antique shop close by. Displayed there was a book which possessed a title that gave me the idea that my home may be mentioned within. Upon opening it, the pages fell directly to a description and photograph of my old place. It was not intended for the purpose, but the volume became a much worn field guide as I sought to visit and photograph other antebellum homes in the vicinity. I pursued that objective with interest and vigor. This caused me to notice the old churches en route and I began to photograph them. Behind the churches were cemeteries. Cemeteries that I found to be serene and sublime, full of lore. In turn they led me here and I stayed.

|Louis du Mort||RE: Bub|
Had I seen the name 'Bub', I would have assumed he was a trucker before he was a biker. Turns out, he was both!
What a bummer that his three sons died at birth.
Thanks for shooting this my way.
|AnnieRuth Cosby||RE: Thank You|
Your original photo was great. I was being dumb and clicked on request a photo, thinking I needed to ask permission to access it or something (I did just grab it after). I'm new at this. I tried to attach a list of the 12 children of Duke and Penelope (KImbrough)'s listed in my records, but as I said I'm new at this.
If you ever come across Austin Wingfield Cosby-Adeline Davis (Duke's parents), John Powell Mary Turner or any Turners/Powells (they may be over in Enfield, not sure where you photograph) or (we're talking 1700s here): Duke Cosby-Amelia Harris, Charles CosbyJR-Rebecca Wood, Elizabeth Wingfield-(her husband Charles Cosby SR remarried and is buried in Georgia), or David Cosby, any Cosbys, I will be thanking you again. They are all buried in Louisa- Hanover County somewhere. Where exactly helps us understand their story better.
Duke's oldest son, my husband's ggrandfather, left VA with his young wife after the devastation of the Civil War ...all the way to California, became a western family. So, again, thanks. I'm going to show your pictures at the family reunion, map with place names, learn a little more.
|AnnieRuth Cosby||Thank You|
Thank you very much for photographing the headstone of Duke L. Cosby and sourcing the cemetery. He was my husband's GG Grandfather. We appreciate this.

|Jeffrey William Megown||An addition to the 4th Virginia cavalry|
Please add my great grandfather Francis Childs 23711659 to your 4th Virginia Cavalry cemetery. He served in Company H. Thank you.
|JD Edwards||Laurel Hill Baptist Church|
Just curious why you have taken so few photos at this cemetery; must have taken you longer to travel there than take the photos. I think this is the least photographed cemetery I have visited.
|LRobin||RE: John Wickham|
Thanks. That would just drive me crazy.

George, I was researching what turned out to be a different Purks line. Finding limited info on the ancestry sites, I turned to newspaper articles. Every now and then I get lucky.
