RE: John Franklin Burial

Bob, again many thanks.

I do have a 1905 topo of my home area in very small scale. It has helped me to find several old home site foundations and bridge structures that no longer exist. I really do need to find that archives and see if other maps are available that surround the map I have.

Take care, "Bo"

RE: John Franklin Burial

Hi Bob

Thanks for the nice reply and adding more material to the mysterious whereabouts of John Franklin. I will continue searching and plan a trip to his grant property this Thursday.

My maternal grandmother was a Franklin, born in Linville Falls, NC in a house built about 1880 by her grandfather, Albert J. Franklin, a veteran of the NC 58th in the Civil War. The house is still lived in by my cousins.

This property was part of the original large land grants secured by John Franklin's son, Samuel. Samuel would be my 4th G-GF.

Anyhow, I am a retired biology teacher, been retired 16 years from Freedom High School in Morganton, NC, my hometown. I too had nearly a minor in geology, but wished I had paid more attention to those courses as I have spent most of my free life in the woods.

I started buying USGS topo quads in 1969 when they were only fifty cents. Today, I have all the quads and updates covering Western NC, Eastern TN, and SW stomping grounds for fly fishing, turkey hunting, and general exploring. I also have the same in US Forest Service "modified" maps which you are probably familiar with.

Just got back from finding a long-lost mineral springs resort hotel foundation in back woods a few miles from my house ........burned in 1934, built in 1878, and was the largest wood frame structure in NC at the time it stood. Been hunting for it for a year. Topo and compass helped me finally find the location.

Would love to get together with you...........we would have a lot in common.

THANKS AGAIN, "Cousin Bo" Cash, also singer Johnny's 6th cousin, but I do not sing!

Lord family
I wanted to thank you for adding the bios to the Lord family memorials. I, too, am a descendant of Thomas Lord and Dorothy Bird. They being my 9th gr-grandparents. Great work and awesome job! We plan on visiting the Ancient burial grounds in Conn. sometime this spring :)

Best regards,

David D. Franklin
I saw that you had posted a memorial to David D. Franklin - very well done! David would have served with my gg grandfather, John M. Whitmire, born 1840 in Jackson County, Georgia. He was in Company D., Third U.S. Volunteers and I am sure they knew each other considering the amount of time they served. Memorial number 18964686

Galvanized Yankee
This was a great story! I had no idea about this opportunity for the soldiers / POWs. Very interesting. Thank you for sharing.

Thank you very much for updating his profile. Lorenzo is a cousin of my wife. Parents are buried in the old Black Creek Cemetery, site of the Black Creek ME Church now the Voorheesville ME Ch. That site is overgrown, I photoed their stones. More dots connected. Bill Preston

Many NC and SC names
Abercrombies is one of the names I am interested in. Robert, I want to thank you so much for helping others through your work with Find A Grave. You really mean a lot to people like me who can no longer visit cemeteries because of age and health. I depend so much on Find A Grave and without people like you, where would we be?
I am trying to do as much as possible to my family files in order for my descendants and others connected can know their heritage. I am 87 now and precarious health issues. I hope you won't mind my making copies of your photos for my family files. Thanks in advance. God bless you in every effort you make to help others through Find A Grave.
