|Daniel Atkinson||Aida Overton Walker|
I am writing a book on Aida's husband George and in doing so, I have discovered why her name has two spellings. Her birth name is Ada, but in late 1902 another Ada (Ada Guiguesse) was added to the cast to sing the song, "Brown Skin Baby Mine," a song later attributed to Abbey Mitchel who was the wife of the Musical Director, Will Marion Cook. With two women of the same name in the cast an "I" was added to the name of Aida Overton Walker from then on. I have one of the few surviving photographs of Guiguesse from her brief time with the cast in the London version of the show in early 1903.

The information you provided has already proven valuable. Thank-you!
According to the 1900 and 1910 NY City Census records, she lived in that ten year span with her mother Pauline Reed, husband George, and for a time a cousin named Margaret Davis who's listed as also being an actor. Also Mrs.Walkers' first name is written as Ada on both census forms.
I have looked at many official documents from the 1910s and 20s and have found many discrepancies in dates and names due to handwritten errors,
which may explain the cemetery record of her name. My great great grandmothers cemetery record had to be corrected for this very reason.
Being a (book nerd) also, you may be interested in finding "Bodies in Dissent" by Daphne Brooks.
There is a chapter dedicated to Williams @ Walker's "In Dahomey" and also good stuff on Aida. The books subtitle is "Spectacular Performances of Race and Freedom, 1850-1910. I highly recommend it.

I have been searching for Aidas' grave location for quite awhile. There seems to be very little published information about her life.
Your memorial page is very well written and informative. Currently I am working on a series of paintings depicting Ms. Walker.
Can you recommend any good source material?
Do you know if she has a grave marker?
