Excerpt from "Abie's Irish Rose:

FATHER WHALEN. Sure, we're all trying to get to the same place when we pass on. We're just going by different routes. We can't all go on the same train.
RABBI. And just because you are not riding on my train, why should I say your train won't get there?
Anne Nichols (1891-1966), American playwright; from Abie's Irish Rose (play), 1922

Haunting eyes peering at me
Through the veiled, forgotten past;
Spirit voices, phantom actors
Beckon me to join their cast...
Time unravels ancient stitches
As I vainly grasp each thread;
Scattered whispers, faded photos
Tell the tale of those long dead...
Withered memories pressed like flowers
Speak of young love once in bloom;
Scented traces faintly linger
Over long-neglected tomb...
Ghostly chanting leads me blindly
Down each darkened corridor..
As I ponder things that once were
-Things that are will be no more...

One of my favorite poems by Alan Seeger:

"I Have a Rendezvous with Death"

I have a rendezvous with Death
At some disputed barricade,
When Spring comes back with rustling shade
And apple-blossoms fill the air--
I have a rendezvous with Death
When Spring brings back blue days and fair.

It may be he shall take my hand
And lead me into his dark land
And close my eyes and quench my breath--
It may be I shall pass him still..
I have a rendezvous with Death
On some scarred slope or battered hill.
When Spring comes round again this year
And the first meadow-flowers appear.

God knows 'twere better to be deep
Pillowed in silk and scented down.
Where love throbs out in blissful sleep,
Pulse nigh to pulse and breath to breath,
Where hushed awakenings are dear--
But I've a rendezvous with Death
At midnight in some flaming town,
When Spring trips forth again this year,
And I to my pledged word am true,
I shall not fail that rendezvous.

-Alan Seeger (1888-1916)

"The Time Is Now"

If you are ever going to love me,
Love me now while I can know
The sweet and tender feelings,
Which from true affection flow.
Love me now, while I am living...
Do not wait until I'm gone
And then have it chiseled in marble,
Sweet words on ice-cold stone.
If you have tender thoughts of me, please tell me now...
If you wait until I am sleeping, never to awaken,
There will be death between us and I won't hear you then.
So, if you love me , even a little bit,
Let me know while I am living so I can treasure it.

RE: Anne Nichols
Hi again. Here is a photo of her gravestone:

I thought I saw it on your memorial, but I was mistaken.

All the best,

I couldn't say for sure whether it is, but she is buried in the Actors' Fund Section, and this photo is of the main marker for that section (the tall obelisk) and the rows of markers of all the people in that section. I am happy to remove it if you don't like it.

All the best,

I recently acquired a new portrait painting by him. Unfortunately, I do not know the name of the woman (the portrait sitter) :( I remembered that you were also interested in his work. If you would like to see this painting, let me know. It is much smaller than my grandmother's portrait. I would say it is about 1/4 of the size. Still very lovely and a wonderful portrait. He was quite talented. If you have information about other portraits at any time I would love to hear as well. Perhaps I should ask his children if they recognize the sitter(?) Seems like a long shot.

RE: Anne Nichols
It seems that images can not be sent this way - I would need an email address. I can share the links. The articles are from the Brooklyn Daily Eagle.

What I find strange is that he is said to be buried in St John's Cemetery (under others) on wikipedia, but he there is no lot listing for him when his name is entered in the cemeteries search engine...

Edward Payson Weston
I've been doing a little research on him of late. I see that you left some notes and that you are a relative of Anne Nichols. I would like to thank you for your relatives kindness.

I have emailed FindAGrave in the hopes that Mr Weston will be granted famous status.

I've also noted that he was buried in St John's Cemetery (not Columbarium). Therefore the location would be in Queens not Brooklyn. Another contributor has the correct resting place.

I've contact both contributors in the hopes of correcting this.

I have a copy of his obit and another about your relative's kindness to Mr Weston - if you would like to read them - from the Brooklyn Eagle.

Thanks again, Bryan

You did the memorial for Mr. Stinson several years ago. Do you have any contact info for the family? I am working on a biography of Victor Young and he worked with Mr. Stinson in Paramount's music dept.

RE: Henry Duffy Pictures
I was happy to send you the revised book, Bob. Don't expect to find a lot of new information. Most of the changes were clarification of details along with the addition of the new pictures as well as adding about 100 new play titles in the appendix. Henry's daughter, Pat, had a treasure trove of pictures from the theatrical career of Henry and Dale (the new pictures in the book are from that collection). I digitized most of the collection and would be happy to provide you with the picture files on a thumb drive if you wish.
