Hello Melinda,

Again thanks for the wonderful picture and even more for the interesting story that goes with it. You must be almost as much a Genealogy nerd as I am to take the time to link a yearbook to folks not in your direct family. If it would not be too much trouble I would like to have the other pictures you mentioned. Please email them to me at

Regards, Tom Jenkins

I am truly interested how you happen to have this 1933 High School picture of my father's first Cousin, and my first cousin once removed. It is a wonderful item and I thank you for posting it.

RE: Benjamin Stickney Jr
Hi Melinda,

The photo on his page is actually loaded automatically to the memorial as it is the gate shot for the entire cemetery. Because of this, I cannot change it on the memorial page. The rotation of photos is a known isse on the old site. The photo is showing correct on my laptop, however it was taken with an iPhone. When viewed on mobile devices (iPhone, iPad, etc), the old site reads the EXIF meta data from the original photo even though I edited and uploaded the photo on my laptop.

Here is how the Find a Grave admin explained it in the Forums:

"Question: Photos (taken by other people) are occasionally showing up sideways or upside down on my ipad. They are correct on my desktop. Why are they doing this? Can I adjust my ipad settings so the photos look correct? Thanks!

Answer: This is an issue with EXIF meta data stored in the photo and various browsers and how they treat or do not treat that information.

Since the base code for Find A Grave is still the same as it was 15 years ago, this issue is not going to be fixed until the complete code rewrite is completed bringing the site into the 21st century. Keep in mind that phones and cameras with GPS tagging were not the norm back then.

Basically, the new code has to take into account 8 different possible orientations for each photo as well as which browser is being used in order to determine how to display the photo. This is exceedingly complex and beyond the capability of the current code structure."

That being said, I checked the photo on the new site and on the cemetery page it is showing correct on my laptop but still upside down on my mobile device, so I will report that to the Beta test team. On the new site the main cemetery photos no longer show on the memorial page at all. Here you will see there is no photo for Benjamin on the new site -

Sorry for the long message, hope that it explains the situation.

I did get her name from a cemetery record. I was hunting for Woodhull's. Unfortunately, a lot of cemeteries in NYC have disappeared over the years. The cemetery record might be the only link that we can find!
