Bio and Links
Bio Photo Please remember that this website has grown thanks to a lot of volunteers. We're not a homogeneous group. We have different values, different styles, different abilities, and sometimes we just plain make mistakes. So, given the nature of our mutual enterprise, we've got to learn how to "do difference."
If you're irritated and frustrated by people who think or feel differently than you do, then please try a personal conversation before resorting to power moves and policing. Relationship goes a long way toward solving problems, which is something that Abraham Lincoln understood very well: "I don't like that man," he said, "I must get to know him better."
NOTE: If you send me an edit, please send a source for the information. If I don't receive a source, I will attempt to contact you. But if your contact information is blocked, then I will automatically delete the edit.
NOTE: Please do not use my photographs without permission. If you send me an email message, I will gladly grant permission for your personal use.
NOTE: Per find-a-grave guidelines you are entitled to request memorials for direct ancestors up to 4 generations. I receive quite a volume of requests and have found that the tone of such requests has changed recently, from gratitude that the memorials were created to blatant entitlement, and that's a very disturbing trend. I am not a casual graver or phone-tographer. I generally research the families whose memorials I've created and whose photos I've taken (or intend to take) and linked members over many generations. After all that work, it's quite a loss to transfer my memorials, but I'm willing to do so if your relationship trumps mine.
OK, enough said. And now back to busines:
Many people have asked me how I am able to take such clear photographs of the very old stones in the burial grounds of VT and NY.
Let me say first that I have taken some terrible photographs in my day, and I am still going back to re-shoot those stones. I am not a professional photographer and I use only a point-and-shoot digital camera.
But I have been gifted with two good friends who deserve much of the credit for my photos: my long-time genealogical buddy, Steven Smith, who gave me two invaluable tips for photographing difficult stones (just send me an email message if you'd like my write-up of Steve's tips); and my mirror-and-umbrella-bearer, Fay Smith (unrelated to Steve), who willingly slogs through waist-high grass and dark woods with me each summer, in the most oppressive heat and humidity, and in spite of the squads of mosquitoes and flies that routinely assail us. How anyone can remain cheerful under such circumstances continues to amaze me, but Fay does.
Were it not for Steve's advice, Fay's help, and the unfailing support of my husband Jim Boyce - who allows me two months each year in his native state of Vermont - I would be unable to "do cemetery," much less get good photographs.
And finally I would like to acknowledge my canine companions - Millie, Malarkey and Mischief - Springer Spaniels whose enthusiasm for "doing cemetery" over the years has rivaled my own!

RE: Hattie L. Bourne Clark
Excellent! Thanks for the confirmation of burial location. I've added the memorials for Hattie, George, Mary and Martha as well as family links. I hadn't realized Martha was there, so that was a good find as well.

Thanks also for adding the memorial for Alanson Douglass' first wife, Mary. With her addition, I've almost found my direct ancestors on this branch of the family all back to the same level.

Which goes to your second post... The only ones who are missing are Henry Bourne's parents. One tree on (with no sources listed, so not sure how trustworthy) says their names are Orson and Susan. I do have sources that say Henry was born in Rutland County. So if you happen to come across them, that would be great. Thanks again for your help :)

RE: Alanson Douglass Memorial
Thanks! Here's what I've got from my mom's old family scrapbook/album. But if this/these stone(s) really exist, they haven't been entered yet. And I am not a fan of making memorials with burial unknown as placeholders -- that's how we end up with duplicates when someone actually walks the cemetery. I did find her mother and siblings in the Poultney Cemetery (#75696197). So maybe these ones are there also.

Harriet "Hattie" Louise Bourne Clark
b. 1 Mar 1866, Poultney, VT
d. 14 Dec 1940, Elmira, NY
Daughter of Henry Austin and Lydia (Douglass) Bourne.

At the end of her obit, it says: "The body will be taken to Poultney, Vt., and a committal service held at the grave there Wednesday at 11 a.m."

Then there is an old paper with the inscriptions:

(Poultney, Vermont)
Mary F
Daughter of
H.A. and L.D. Bourne
Mar. 8, 1870
AE 5 Yrs, 5 Mon. & 25 Das.
Gone to that savior she loved
so much to sing of ______
George W. Clark
Hattie L. Bourne
1866 - 1940

RE: Alanson Douglass Memorial
Hi Janet, No problem, and thanks for the nice detailed reply. I figured it couldn't hurt to ask, but I completely understand your reasons for keeping it! Interestingly, Alanson's granddaughter Harriet "Hattie" (my great-great grandmother) married a George Clark. I've been trying to figure out where he came from/who his parents are. I've found a few George Clarks, but they have turned out to be the wrong ones. If you run into a George Clark with ties to this area, I'd be grateful! Additionally, Hattie's body was apparently sent to Poultney, VT for burial after her death, but I haven't found any Harriet or Hattie Clark memorials.

James Rustin Wallingford VT
Hello I'm not sure how this site works but I saw you posted about James Rustin, Hatter. Married to Sarah Louise Dickerman.

I wondered do you have a name of either of his parents?

He is my grandmothers, grandfathers, father.
I have come to a dead end with James, except a possible William Rustin in Litchfield CT.

Any snippet would be great.
Many thanks Cat Howell-Thomas

RE: Relief (Bent) Gurnsey & Earl Bent
Hello Janet,
I sent the links to the memorials for Relief Bent Guernsey and Earl Francis Bent's parents, David Bent and Phebe Whittemore Bent. You have the parents' names listed on Earl Francis Bent's memorial.

My source is The Bent Family in America genealogy. Page 40 lists the children of David Bent and Phebe Whittemore Bent.

There are several children and as I find their memorials, I am submitting edits to link them to their parents. Relief Bent Guernsey and husband are my husbands' 5x great grandparents, making her parents his 6x great grandparents.

Thank you for your memorials!

RE: Isaac Gates
wow! that's pretty neat knowledge you've uncovered. I'll ask at the office and see if they've anything else not on the papers in front of me.
