Bio and Links
Bio Photo We have just recently started searching for our family histories. We are retired now and have some extra (?) time on our hands and we like to do this together. There are a lot of old cemeteries in Southern Illinois and it is a challenge to find some of them. We eat lunch with seniors several times a week and there is a wealth of information to be obtained from them.

George Jennings.
I just noticed the bio info for George Jennings birthday is wrong on the site. It is a later date that doesn't correspond with the marker date. Do you mind correcting? Thank you again

Thank you for posting the photo of the stone standing over my great granparents grave. George Jennings and Mary Rector Jennings. Kerley seems like a familar name to me. Are you any relation the Jennings? I traveled from my home in Oregon to Johnson County 1n 1989 and got a photo of the marker, but since misplaced. Am I able to add an obituary written by one of her granddaughters? Thank you again.

Yandell's in Vienna Fraternal
I just wanted to let you know that someone made some duplicate memorials for Miles and Lucinda Yandell in the Vienna Fraternal Cemetery. I believe they also took your photo and put them on the duplicate memorials. I am going to report them duplicates.
just want to give you a heads up that your photos have been used on another memorial.

Hello Ray,
I see you have posted my grandfathers brother's grave marker in Gilead Cemetery. What made you look that one up? There are 13 plot there in a row of the Chambers family, some are unmarked, but I dowsed them and all plots are full. My Great Grandfather James William Chambers bought those plots, he was Justice of the Peace in Johnson County from 1885 to 1905. He was also a Sgt. in the Union Army during the Civil War, Company B, 6th Mounted Infantry of TN. He was 19 years old when he volunteered. He road his horse back to Chattanooga, TN., when he was mustered out in Nashville on June 30, 1865. He stayed there for one month, then he and his wife (Sarah Shelton) made the journey back to Johnson County, Illinois in October of 1865. He had a 96 1/2 acre farm on Rock Springs Road in Simpson, where he raised to families, one with his wife Sarah (6 children), she was only 36 years old when she died and is buried in Gilead next to him, there was a field stone that marked her grave on the left side of him. A few years ago, I noticed the stone was missing, probably the mowing crew is responsible? Then when his wife died, he later re-married in 1885 to Frances Ara Voiles, she is my Great Grandmother (her mother was Indian), they had four sons, William Washington Chambers (my Grandfather), Clarence, Walter and Martin Luther. Clarence & Walter are buried next to their mother. My grandfather then raised another generation of Chambers on that farm with 8 more children, my mother was the last born on the farm in 1921. Thomas B. Kerley was the Chambers family doctor and delivered about 4 of those boys. James W. , my Grt.Grd. Father married Thomas B. and Elizabeth Simmons when he was Justice of the peace.
I suppose you know Steve Kerley? I met him and his wife the first year I was down there doing research, and attended church at Gilead while there. How is Tommy Gray doing?

Crossroads Cemetery
Johnson County

Hi Ray & Sylvia,

I have submitted an obituary for Roger that was provided by Faye Morris Bowman.

My gg-grandmother Tircy Freeman Triplett (1792-1862) and her daughter Mary E. Triplett Ragains (1823-1862) are buried in Kerley Cemetery in the Flatwoods section of Johnson County. My wife and I visited Kerley Cemetery and nearby Abbott (aka Morris and Morse) Cemetery in June 2013.

I am especially interested in James Moffit Triplett (1798-1885), my gg-grandfather, whose grave I am unable to find anywhere. Also, any other Tripletts you come across in southern Illinois would be greatly appreciated.
