Cemeteries are "a memorial and a record. (They are) not a mere field in which the dead are stowed away unknown; it is a touching and beautiful history, written in family burial plots, in mounded graves, in sculptured and inscribed monuments. (They tell) the story of the past, not of its institutions, or its wars, or its ideas, but of its individual lives,--of its men and women and children, and of its household. (A cemetery) is silent, but eloquent; it is common, but it is unique. We find no such history elsewhere; there are no records in all the wide world in which we can discover so much that is suggestive, so much that is pathetic and impressive." ~~ Joseph Anderson, American clergyman (1836-1916) |
For a very touching poem, see "Dear Ancestor" by Walter Butler Palmer.

I believe obituaries provide much needed genealogical information that if not captured will be lost. With the increase in cremations, obituaries might be all that outlives our ancestors. Since obituaries are already published in newspapers and on the internet, anonymity has already been compromised.

|John Mallory Land||Mem. #102200247|
Hi, Linda - I hope you're doing well. I have a question for you regarding an image you posted on Mem. #102200247 for W. W. McGEHEE (buried 23 OCT 1901, aged 35 years). I wondered where you got the graphic showing what Sexton-system lots (C-565, etc.) make up the HILL-MULFORD family lot (Autry's J-165) ? Is this something you devised yourself, did you find it somewhere, or was it provided by a family member or other individual? Thanks so much - John

Hi, Linda – I hope you’re doing well. On Mem. #117059233 for Saphronia (CALHOUN) WEST, you posted on 20 SEP 2013 a photo of a lot. In the caption, you stated: “Mrs. West is buried in the Clark/Ridgeway lot. There are three unmarked graves in that lot. I believe hers is one of them, as all other graves are identified. LFA” However, the lot pictured in your photograph (RIDGEWAY Lot) is on the north site of South Street #3, between Cedar Street and Magnolia Avenue. The lot Mrs. WEST is buried in is on the north side of South Street #2, between Cedar and Magnolia. Hers is the only burial reported in Section 2, Lot 1020, according to the Sexton's records. There was a request for a photo of the grave, which I fulfilled today. By the way, I have also just submitted to the Contributor who created this memorial a transcription of the newspaper death and funeral notices (which you posted an image of) to be included in the biographical section. Thanks and best regards - John

I fulfilled a photo request for a picture of Jesse Beede's grave (Emily's husband) at Bluff View Cemetery in South Dakota.
I have photos of other graves located with Jesse's, including: Emily, William, and Rosa (you're shown as the manager of all three memorials). These memorials don't already have pictures. Is it OK if I post the ones I have?

|BParker||Created Memorials 74239158 & 81758739|
You created the above mentioned memorials for Fred Chaussee and Florence Authier Chaussee respectively and then transferred them to I believe a family member. I requested a grave marker picture for them out from Grace Hill Cemetery Hawarden, Iowa through Find A Grave. A volunteer went out and the office said there is no record of these people in the cemetery. Can you tell me how you knew of this cemetery for Fred/Florence Authier Chaussee?

|Kyle Wernli||Canion Family|
Hello I am a descendant of the Canion family and I am related through Joseph Monroe Canion and James W Canion I am doing research on James father to validate that Wiley Cannon is his father I will need Wills, military records, census from when james would have been in the house, bible records, birth records (usually from a church) newspaper articles...things like this are all standard accepted documentation. Is there any proof that Wiley Cannon is James W Canions father can you help me ?
I already have a Will of Wiley Cannon however I still need some more source to validate him as the father of James W Canion.
