Bio and Links
Bio Photo I volunteer at Oakwood Cemetery in Niagara Falls and I enjoy putting up memorials for our residents. I will gladly accept transfers for Oakwood folks, too. I will take good care of them.

I have some limited access to St. Mary's and Sacred Hearts Cemeteries, which are adjacent to Oakwood, although most of their records have been destroyed and the cemeteries are in ill repair.

St. Joseph's, Holy Trinity and Gate of Heaven (Lewiston) are not far away and within my travel range for photo requests. I will only take photo requests that already have grave section/area info because these are HUGE cemeteries. Call the cemetery office, tell them you are from far away and ask they provide you with the info so you can send someone else to get the photo. Most places will do one or two requests for FREE. After more than a couple, however, be prepared to pay some sort of fee.

Riverdale and Accacia Park will NOT process requests for Find A Grave photographers and are particularly unfriendly about it. Call them and get the grave location and put it in your photo request. These cemeteries want to charge photographers if they go in and ask for help. For one or two requests, they MIGHT do it over the phone for YOU. Remember: your family BOUGHT plots there. They work for YOU.

Visit my Virtual Cemetery "Oakwood's River Folks" for folks who have died stunting at The Falls or in The Niagara River and then stop by and say hi to my recently departed best friend, Eilean "Ellie" Lyonhil Donan in the Virtual Cemetery, "Beloved Friends".

Mary Evelyn "Eva" Fenwick Stahle (125167725)
Nice to hear from you, Giselle -- been a long time!
I did some additional research and added her military service to the biographical section of Mary Evelyn "Eva" Fenwick Stahle's memorial (125167725), and also my website. Thanks for suggesting it! ~ Elsa

REFERENCE: Could you mention she was a nurse in the US NY Army Corp in her bio? We are trying to log all our vets at Oakwood and it's unusual when a woman's name pops up. I want to make sure that when someone looks at her bio they know she served her country! Thx. Giselle (scotdeerie on Find A Grave)

Find a Grave photo request for Joseph Giroux (2)
Hi, This is the email you sent me using Windows 10 Outlook, but my email reply did not get through & was rejected as apparently I cannot respond using regular email. Scott

Hi,

I work with Oakwood Cemetery to try and fulfill photo requests in Find a Grave. I have been looking for Joseph Giroux and do not see his name in the old cemetery records. This isn’t unusual but may I ask if you are sure he is buried at Oakwood?

I’ve found Elizabeth (King) Van Wagnen who was buried on 6/12/1897. For your records, she was 82 years old and is located in Blk 1.

I’ve found Henry Van Wagnen who was buried on 2/14/19
890 and is in Lot 139.

In that same Lot 139 these other Van Wagnen’s are also listed:

Allen, 1 year old, buried 12/20/1889
Ella, 3 years old, buried 2/3/1890

There are two more Van Wagnen’s in Oakwood:

Henry Van Wagnen, 98 years old, buried 11/28/1951, location: Blk 1, E End, L1969
Alice H Van Wagnen, 76 years old, buried 11/15/1957, Lot968

Can you please confirm if Giroux is known to be in Oakwood?  Without records, it may be a long and fruitless search but I will continue. The other info is for your records in case they are also family members. If you want photos of these graves please put in a photo request on Find A Grave and let me know by email, please.

I hope there is some info here you can use.

MY RESPONSE WAS:

Hi Lisa? Giselle,

According to Niagara Falls NY Gazette newspaper articles: Joseph drowned in the Niagara River in January 1874; May 1874 his body was recovered floating in the river & was interred at Queenston; June 1874 his remains disinterred at Queenston, identified by his widow & his remains brought to Niagara Falls & interred at Oakwood Cemetery.  Other than what appears to be an after the fact newspaper article.  Whether his remains were actually brought to & interred at Oakwood is unknown, hence why I inquired about a possible headstone.  These details are shown upon the second newspaper clipping on Joseph's Find A Grave memorial.

Maybe since this was an extraordinary situation it somehow escaped being entered into the Oakwoods Cemetery records?

If Joseph was interred at Oakwood I do not think it was likely that he was interred at or near his mother or brothers grave & his remains possibly buried where others were buried in 1874?  His widows name appears to have been Nancy, but that is all I can find about her.  Joseph's mother was Elizabeth King/VanWagnen 1816-1897.  Elizabeth appears to be buried by her son (Joseph's half brother) Henry Addison VanWagnen 1853-1951 (as they're on the same marker).  It appears that Henry likely purchased the plots for his mother & himself when she passed away, as his wife Ella Allen/VanWagnen & his two sons Henry & Allen were previously interred with Ella's Allen family.

Thank you for the additional cemetery data!  It is appreciated.

Sincerely,
Scott

Donald R Phillips
Hi,

In regards to your suggestion:

"He was married three times. This memorial gives all the wives names and has a photo of the first wife's tombstone which all shhis name. Maybe these memorials can be blended together? See memorial 16759007"

Per memorial 16759007 his actual burial site is at Tooele City cemetery. This memorial was created as a Cenotaph memorial and is not the actual burial place for Mr. Phillips so blending the memorial together would potentially remove accurate information.

If the contributor who maintains the memorial 16759007 would like I can transfer my memorial to them as I am no relation.

Thanks
Anne

Hi scotdeerie,
Thank you very much for going out and taking the photo of his gravestone.
I'm hoping that you didn't post one on the duplicate memorial.
Thanks,

Kay Newman transfer
Hi, Scott. I sent a message to you on August 9, 2016 requesting that this memorial be transferred to me, but I did not hear back from you. Kathleen Newman is my mom. She has just passed away and I want to add her obituary and be able to be the one responsible for her memorial on findagrave. I am very upset that I am not able to do this. So again, I request the transfer of her memorial to me. Thank you in advance.
