A dear neighbor got me interested in cemeteries while I was a child, she, her daughter and myself use to do Sunday drives and along the way we always stoped at a local cemetery.

Do not stand at my grave and weep.

I am not there. I do not sleep.

I am a thousand winds that blow.

I am the diamond glints on snow.

I am the sunlight on ripened grain.

I am the gentle autumn rain.

When you awaken in the morning's hush,

I am the swift uplifting rush

of quiet birds in circled flight.

I am the soft stars that shine at night.

Do not stand at my grave and cry.

I am not there; I did not die.

If I should not be with you when the next sun sets,
Don't mourn.I've had a lot of sunsets, and I've loved them all.
But I have had such splendid things to love,
You'll know I've had my share.
Don't mourn.
Just reach out to the world:
Embrace it for me.
Grab joy, but let it shine; it may be all that's left of me Still shining.
And when rain dances, know thatI will be the dancing.
Don't forget: I love you always. Still.

John C Johansen memorial 8637461
Dear Laurie:

I visited John Johansen's gravesite last Tuesday. I have more specific information from a 1964 New York Times article and from Wikipedia about this prominent artist. Would you be so kind as to update his bio with the following? Thank you.

John Johansen was one of America's most noted portrait painters. He studied under Frank Duvneck then at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and in 1919 he studied at the Académie Julian in Paris. He met his future wife, Myrtyle Jean McLane, also a portrait artist, at the Art Institute of Chicago.

The U.S. government commissioned Johansen to document the signing of the Treaty of Versailles, now at the National Portrait Gallery in the Smithsonian Institution. Other portraits include: the original Presidential portrait of President Herbert Hoover, a painting of Abraham Lincoln delivering his famous Cooper Union address, official U.S. Department of Justice portrait of Attorney General Robert H. Jackson, official Vermont State House portrait of Governor Percival Clement, two works in the United States Capitol, and works in the collections of the Dallas Museum of Art, National Gallery of Art, Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the National Academy of Design in New York City, the Art Institute of Chicago and the Richmond Art Museum in Indiana.

At the time of his death surviving family included his daughter, Mrs. Robert Worthington; a son, John MacLane Johansen; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
