Bio and Links
Bio Photo If you know of any one memorialized here who served aboard the USS Melvin DD-680 in the Pacific Theatre during WW II, please let me know.

I'm a transplanted New Englander. My parents are Paul Oscar Avery(1921-2003) and Betty Wheaton Avery(1925-1992). My mom's and aunt's interest in family history was passed to me. I have been doing family history research for over 25 years, most of which has been in Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, and Maine.

I am retired, and live in The Villages, Florida, and would be happy to find and photograph cemetery stones of your friends or family in the Sumter - Lake - Marion County area.

If you find some pictures or monuments I haven't included, I'd love to hear from you when you post them. And corrections or additions to my postings are welcome. All suggestions are responded to within 48 hours unless I am out of town. If you supply me with additional information, I will always research and double check it before posting it to a memorial. There is simply too much inaccurate information out there. Please do not use the edit feature for 17th century memorials. Consideration of updates to these memorials requires correspondence with specific documentation.

I have completed projects on all cemeteries in Hawley, Buckland, Colrain, and Charlemont, Massachusetts. And another in Sears Cemetery in Barnstable County. Current projects include the Jenks Family in Rhode Island, the Groton Avery Family, and Shelburne, Franklin Co, Mass cemeteries. If any of my entries connects to your ancestors, let me know.

Memorials I have added in the last 7 days.
Memorials I have added in the last 30 days.
If I have not added any memorials in the last 30 days, I am very likely dead... contact Find A Grave.

Please use the EDIT button on the memorial to initiate correspondence and recommend updates. I am no longer able to respond to emails that do not provide quick and easy access to the memorial in question. Also, if your e-mail is not provided on your profile page, I won't be able to respond to you if a response is needed. The public messages are not appropriate for back and forth discussion. And, if you have no email, I will not process edits until you provide source data.

There are so many "orphan" memorials here on Find-A-Grave, many of which have been posted en masse and then forgotten. So many need identification and linking so we know who they were! After posting a memorial, please take the time to research, identify, and link the memorial properly..... it will go along way toward further establishing the credibility of this site.

Regarding transfers outside guidelines..... I will consider transfer to those who have a proven track record of collaboration on FindAGrave.

RE: Elizabeth Duprey et al
Hi Kevin,
You have done a very thorough job at this cemetery. I enjoy going there to photograph the stones. As I continue I will transfer any new ones to you. I am looking at several Purinton; Puringrton and Purringrton names on stones. It looks confusing. I will tread carefully.

regards,
Michael

RE: Death Date for Sarah Bowen Fuller.
Thanks. I looked up the article and it does indeed say that, however, I don't have access to the original records so I can't verify.

Addison Avery at Forest Home Cemetery
Hi! I fulfilled several photo requests for you back in February. I was recently by his monument, and I noticed that I missed telling you about three other burials.

1. Harold C. Avery
2. Flora L. Avery
3. Anthony E. Avery

Again, there were no dates on this stone, which is the backside of the one I previously photographed. If you add photo requests for them, I will post the photos that I took. I apologize for missing these the first time I was there.

Parentage of William Caropenter
There is much incorrect information about this Richard Carpenter, the father of William Carpenter (1610 - 1685). His parents and birth/baptism date aren't known. He is not the Richard Carpenter who married Susanna Trevelyan. The Richard Carpenter who was married to her was born in Cornwall in 1575.

See: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richard_Carpenter_(theologian)
and: http://www.werelate.org/wiki/Person:Richard_Carpenter_%282%29#S1

See: LINKS TO SKETCHES AND ARTICLES REPRESENTING THE MOST CURRENT AND RELIABLE SCHOLARSHIP CONCERNING EARLY GENERATIONS OF THE CARPENTER FAMILIES OF REHOBOTH, MASSACHUSETTS, AND PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND, AND THEIR ANCESTORS 2008, 2011 by Eugene Cole Zubrinsky
Free copy at:
http://www.carpentercousins.com/RichardA_Amesbury.pdf

Zubrinsky states (paraphrased): RICHARD A CARPENTER, father of William Carpenter of Providence, Rhode Island, was bom in England, probably in or near the Wiltshire town and parish of Amesbury or the adjacent parish of Newton Tony (not in Nettlecombe, Somerset). Probably buried at Amesbury on 9/21/1625; he died intestate. It is possible that he was the Richard Carpenter who married at Newton Tony on 8/7/1603 , Alice Knight .

Another child linked to Levi Eldridge and Sarah Putney
Just a note to say I linked Levi and Sarah to another child, Charles Grovner Eldridge. Thanks for all your work and getting if not all of their children linked. Thanks, Pat

RE: Josiah Thayer et al
Will do Kevin! I think there will be a few more founders and their wives and some children, (I have a potential list that eliminates those known to have moved elsewhere) but I will wait until Ken can confirm something more definitively, initials and years carved if we are lucky, or obvious placement of adults near spouses.

If you look at the Founder's plaque there are a few hints. Josiah Thayer's land was once John Gurney's (Mayflower connection to my family) and he should be here as well. The elder died 1663 before incorporation, the son John inherited (see Braintree and Mendon records), and the 2nd wife remarried and moved away with the 4th or 5th husband, but some of here Jewell children might be around. John Jr ended up in Providence with his 2nd wife but no burial place, would guess North Burial Ground.

I'm even venturing to guess Fernandino Thayer might be here as well.
