|George Wood||Ed Garland 1843-1912|
My father was a circuit court judge in Iowa, serving Black Hawk, Independence and Grundy Counties. Around 1960, 12 1819 Springfield .69 cal. rifles were found in the attic of the old Grundy Center Court House. Sometime after 1819, they had been converted from flintlock to percussion, presumably for use in the Civil War. My father acquired one and gave it to me ... which I still have. The stock is stamped with the name "Ed Garland". Since he served in the Iowa Infantry, I believe this is Ed Garland's Civil War rifle.
