We are the chosen. In each family, there is one who seems called to find the ancestors. To put flesh on their bones and make them live again, to tell the family story and to feel that somehow they know and approve. Doing genealogy is not a cold gathering of facts, but instead, breathing life into all who have gone before. We are the storytellers of the tribe.

Lord, help me dig into the past
And sift the sands of time,
That I might find the roots that made
This family tree of mine.
Lord, help me trace the ancient roads
On which my father's trod,
And led them through so many lands
To find our present sod.
Lord, help me find an ancient book
Or dusty manuscript,
That's safely hidden now away
In some forgotten crypt.
Lord, let it bridge the gap that haunts
My soul when I can't find,
The missing link between some name
That ends the same as mine.

DEAR ANCESTOR
Your tombstone stands among the rest;
Neglected and alone.
The name and date are chiseled out
On polished, marbled stone.
It reaches out to all who care
It is too late to mourn.
You did not know that I exist
You died and I was born.
Yet each of us are cells of you
In flesh, in blood, in bone.
Our blood contracts and beats a pulse
Entirely not our own.
Dear Ancestor, the place you filled
One hundred years ago
Spreads out among the ones you left
Who would have loved you so.
I wonder if you lived and loved,
I wonder if you knew
That someday I would find this spot,
And come to visit you.

*************************************************
Today we walked where others walked
On a lonely, windswept hill;
Today we talked where other cried
For Loved Ones whose lives are stilled.

Today our hearts were touched
By graves of tiny babies;
Snatched from the arms of loving kin,
In the heartbreak of the ages.

Today we saw where the grandparents lay
In the last sleep of their time;
Lying under the trees and clouds -
Their beds kissed by the sun and wind.

Today we wondered about an unmarked spot;
Who lies beneath this hollowed ground?
Was it a babe, child, young or old?
No indication could be found.

Today we saw where Mom and Dad lay.
We had been here once before
On a day we'd all like to forget,
But will remember forever more.

Today we recorded for kith and kin
The graves of ancestors past;
To be preserved for generations hence,
A record we hope will last.

Cherish it, my friend; preserve it, my friend,
For stones sometimes crumble to dust
And generations of folks yet to come
Will be grateful for your trust.

RE: Mary Walsh
Hi

Thank you for the message. I didn't know much about my great aunt's husband either. I always thought he lived in or near Mason City where she was from, but after researching Peter's line, I was surprised to find that he was from Dubuque. Out of curiosity, how is the Palen line connected to this family? Kind regards, Jamie

Mary Walsh
Hi

Thank you for the edits on Peter Haupert & Mary McMenimen Walsh. For Peter's birth date, I changed it back to reflect the headstone & his military headstone application but made a note on his memorial that his Iowa birth record shows 1893 as his birth year. For Mary, her middle name is recorded in my family Bible as Anna. My aunts/uncles have indicated that she was given that name because of her mother's name and that her daughter Anna was named after her. I am wondering if you have another record that my family doesn't know about showing Alice? Are you related to this family? Looking forward to hearing from you. My personal email is jjfinkcjt@charter.net if you would like to contact me that way. Kind regards, Jamie

RE: Roy Albert Swayze
Hi Sally,

I'm so SORRY that I haven't gotten back to you re: my duplicate entry of Mr. Swayze!!! I've been "inactive" over the past year+ due to travel & professional issues,... which went on much longer than anticipated. I'm back now and trying to catch up.

I've always tried to be careful to avoid duplicates, but have noticed a few messages on others as well. Not sure how I missed these, but don't doubt it one bit. I'll be glad to delete my entry, but before I do: please take a look to see if there's any information you'd like to copy, transfer, etc. There are a few Notes & Flowers that I'd hate to get lost in the process,... Hopefully they can be preserved/recovered. I'm thinking that they can, but I'm a little rusty on how things work, etc.

I grew up in Eutaw and remember when Roy & Mary began the work on Kirkwood. It was amazing,... and they were wonderful people.

Once again, I apologize for not tending to this earlier.

Thanks,
Craig

I have deleted one dupe, but could not find a second. If you run across, please let me know. The search engine for the two cemeteries cross-contaminates the two list so there are likely thouands within the two cemeteries as 4 or 5 of us have gotten caught in it. Thanks.
