Hollywood Cemetery in Atlanta, Georgia has been my project since I began on findagrave. It has now been about 13 years ago and started with looking for my GGrandparents. I had never heard of Hollywood Cemetery. My uncle told me where it was. The area around Hollywood was once a middle-class white area. This is no longer the case. Basically it is run down and slummy now.

Lincoln Properties, who owns Hollywood (and other cemeteries) is located about 5 miles away. I went to Lincoln Properties. I was the only white person there. The lady at the desk waited on a number of people while I waited and she was as nice as she could be to them. She was less than nice when it came my turn--she was as un-helpful as she could be to me. She was short and somewhat hateful toward me. Her attitude was really bad. I left mad & frustrated, vowing to list everyone buried at Hollywood. I had no idea there were over 6,000 graves there. And....there is no telling how many more are unaccounted for. A fair amount of them are unmarked. It is just out of downtown Atlanta and is in deplorable condition. I did not want those there to be forgotten. Lincoln has all the records but will not share with me or anyone else. My son & grandson went up into the roughest part (which is woods) taking pictures for me, many thousands of them. A few years later, James Stephens contacted me, wanting to help. Bless his heart, for three years, he systematically searched every inch of the three huge corners and the tiered section. Everything I had not added, he did. He went through tons of kudzu, briers, vines, falling into holes, digging out markers totally covered in dirt and debris, etc. Walls are crumbling due to neglect. You cannot imagine it's condition until you go there. If your relative at Hollywood does not have a marker picture showing, there isn't a marker for them. Still I work on it, literally every day, linking folks to their relatives. I treat each person there as if they are my relative, working to connect them to family members. If you can help in any way, please contact me. You can also go to James' website - www.stephensroots.com, then go to OTHER to get to the ariel maps of Hollywood. He has set and sectioned it off where you can find relatives with markers more easily. It is a jungle out there and in not such a nice neighborhood. Caution is advised.

PLEASE.......when you find your relative's page, leave flowers and at least a short note. In that note, state your relationship to that person. This is a great way to find living members of your family. If you leave nothing, no one knows you are out there. Leaving this lets them know that you are also kin to them and they will contact you. This is a win, win situation.

The Story Tellers...We are the Chosen.

My feelings are in each family there is one who seems called to find the ancestors. To put flesh on their bones and make them live again, to tell the family story and to feel that somehow they know and approve. To me, doing genealogy is not a cold gathering of facts but, instead, breathing life into all who have gone before. We are the story tellers of the tribe. All tribes have one. We have been called, as it were, by our genes.
Those who have gone before cry out to us: Tell our story. So, we do.

In finding them, we somehow find ourselves. How many graves have I stood before now and cried? I have lost count. How many times have I told the ancestors you have a wonderful family - you would be proud of us?

How many times have I walked up to a grave and felt somehow there was love there for me? I cannot say.

It goes beyond just documenting facts. It goes to who am I and why do I do the things I do. It goes to seeing a cemetery about to be lost forever to weeds and indifference and saying I can't let this happen. The bones here are bones of my bone and flesh of my flesh. It goes to doing something about it. It goes to pride in what our ancestors were able to accomplish. How they contributed to what we are today. It goes to respecting their hardships and losses, their never giving in or giving up, their resoluteness to go on and build a life for their family.

It goes to deep pride that they fought to make and keep us a Nation. It goes to a deep and immense understanding that they were doing it for us. That we might be born who we are. That we might remember them. So we do. With love and caring and scribing each fact of their existence, because we are them and they are us.

Hi Judy - Just want to let you know you are doing a wonderful service to our ancestors and their desendants. Thanks! What source do you have on Sarah's death and burial since she is unmarked?
This info would help a lot since I believe she is
family. Barbara

He is my 3rd great grandfather. Was just wondering what happened to the picture of his head stone. I am making a list of the head stones of those in my family whose stones need cleaning or repair (not that I will ever get around to doing all the tasks as there are many). I just wondered what happened to the pictures that were on Find A Grave. Sorry I forgot to copy the number of the memorial before I went to leave the message. I noticed a mention of being in his direct line so hopefully will not be a problem to find. Thanks
Regards

I have posted pics to Mary Jones' memorial. Everything seems to fit except the death date, which is 2 days off. If you think the photos are in error, let me know and I'll delete them. Thanks
