August 9th marks the 75th anniversary of the Battle of Savo Island near Guadalcanal in the Solomon Islands. Most Americans are unaware how close the U.S. came to losing the war in the Pacific. The cruisers Astoria, Quincy and Vincennes were sunk. The destroyer Jarvis attempted after the engagement to escape to Australia on it's own until found by the enemy and sunk. The cruiser Houston had already been lost earlier, along with the carriers Lexington and Yorktown, and shortly after this Wasp and Hornet would go down. Then came the naval battle of Guadalcanal on November 13, 1942 which saw the loss of the cruisers Juneau and Atlanta. Later the cruisers Northampton and Chicago would be lost. San Francisco, Portland and Helena survived but were seriously damaged. If not for the exploits of the battleships North Carolina,|
Washington and South Dakota, all may have been lost for the forces of the United States in the Southwest Pacific
It has taken me 5 years and 10 visits to the Manila American Cemetery and Memorial to finally finish photographing all the names on the Tablets of the Missing. All 36,000+ names. It's a lot more work than one might think. That's about 5,700 photos in my estimation. The walls that carry these names are about 16 feet tall.
It's my sincerest hope that someday soon the white marble upright crosses can be repainted and then photographed. It's been more than 60 years since they were installed and are quite faded, and in my estimation another 35-50 years many will not be legible to read unless a restoration process takes place.
If interested about some facts regarding the Manila American Cemetery, you can click on my bio photo to the left for some statistics.
For corrections, additions, or requests for transfer of memorial, please use the Edit tab, and select Suggest a Correction or Provide Additional Information to make any update requests. It is much easier to handle the issue this way, rather than a personal message.
I am happy to update any memorial, including family links. But I DO NOT like adding census information, copies of death certificates and please do not add long obituaries to the "photo" area. The information can be condensed and pasted into the bio area. If you don't have the time to type out the obituary, just email it to me. I will add it and give you credit for finding it.
I appreciate any information that can "round out" someone's bio.

|Connie Thomas||Thank you|
My great uncle Ron, was last seen by my Dad, also serving in the Marines,on Tinian Island just prior to the sinking of the Indianapolis. It haunted my father the rest of his life.
|Josh Farrell||Thank You!!|

|remembering||Big Thank You|
Wow, you are quick. Thank you so much for the memorial photo for Harold Logan and others memorialized at Manila American Cemetery and Memorial. He has three different memorials all far from the others, and three Find A Grave memorials. This one gives so much more information.

Thank you so much for what you're doing. What a project! Guy's uncle was killed in WWI in France which is how I came to find Guy.

His record now:
|Tricia Partridge||Lillian Estelle Cook Watson|
Thank you. I knew that. Sorry about that. It has been a while since I was on Find A Grave and totally forgot. I took care of it. Thanks again.

My Lillian that is my husband's grandmother does not belong on the Benjamin Watson family page. Her parents are not listed because I forgot to put them on but they are John Cook 1848 and Rebeca Cook not Benjamin Franklin and Mary Kate Watson. Please remove them or prove to me how you may have obtained their names as her parents. Thank you.
Hi Tim. First, as a veteran let me thank you for your contribution in honoring those you have added to find a grave. I know their families cannot say enough onto thanking you for your care and thoughtfulness.
While researching though the name of Wibbels, and Wibbles, I discovered that the above memorial, listed as a Wibbles, is in fact a Wibbels. LT Wibbels has also been entered as #69884964. Would you consider removing #69557220? Again, tHank you.

Tim, thanks a lot for this photo. Question: your photo had a lot of other names on it and some Find A Grave memorials for them don't have photos. Could I either use your photo, giving you credit, and add to those? Or I could enter requests for you to fill? Thanks again - Jim-S
