Besides researching my family (+ in-laws) I'm chief volunteer genealogist for the worldwide group Porteous Associates which collects trees & shares information for all Portei. We don't sell, post or publish trees as privacy of living individuals respected, but exchange trees with interested family historians. If I've entered a family member of yours which you'd like to manage, ask - glad to transfer.|
Mid-2013 Find-a-grave updated geographical entries which resulted in automated changes which have 'fixed' locations listing closest community - NOT always correct! I've attempted to edit these, but apologize if some missed - if you spot any, feel free to use the 'edit' option to send a correction.
Also a warning to recheck links to memorials you don't control - make sure they're still there! I've had 'memorial not found' show up as various entries/cemeteries have been deleted & reentered instead of edited? Dead links (excuse the pun) aren't too helpful!

|Bill Porteous||Portice Confusion|
There seems to be some confusion on Zelotes Portice and his wife Mary Ann Young.
The confusion is caused by Mary Ann's first marriage which was to the brother George Edward. Mary and George had 2 children, one before (George Marsden) and one(Charity Ann) after they were married. Mary Ann was the second of George's 4 wives.
George moved to Iowa and Zelotes to Michigan. One of the other brothers, Marsden II, also moved to Michigan. Marsden II never had the name George as one of his names.
It is my understanding that South Dakota has the highest percentage of people with the name Portice. I believe most of these to be descendants of George Edward.

Hi Pat ~
Without doubt this is a tombstone by stone carver John Solomon Teetzel, marked with his signature "T" on the bottom.
I've compiled a virtual cemetery of his tombstone work in both New Jersey & Ontario here: http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=vcsr&GSvcid=262026
See also the 'Minisink to Ontario' virtual cemetery for others who migrated: http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=vcsr&GSvcid=529404
I'm always interested in families from Sussex & Warren Counties NJ (the majority), Orange & Sullivan Counties NY, Monroe, Pike & Wayne Counties PA who settled in Upper Canada (later Ontario) in the late 18th & early 19th centuries. Please drop me a line if you happen upon any tombstones bearing place of birth or the distinctive work of John Solomon Teetzel.

|Robert Yarrington||RE: Zelotous Portice|
Mary Ann (Young) Portice has been a real challenge. The only family member that I've found that links the Portice family to my family is Zelotous & Mary Ann's daughter Olive. Her second husband was married to my 2nd cousin 1x removed Clarence Rich. I did find in someones tree that she died in 1945 in Detroit, Michigan. I couldn't find a source to prove it though.
Actually, I've been recording every grave in the Downing Cemetery near Deckerville, Michigan and got off track with the Portice family. I tend to get hooked on research when I can't find someone I'm trying to link which is way it's taken me four years so far. It looks like I've given the Portice family some glues which gives me satisfaction. Let me know if there's anything more I can do to be helpful.
OK, I have added the photos.
My other message was unclear I guess - the other Porteous plot I found was Roy and I had added the photos. (interesting to note that this grave is directly behind my parents - been there many times, but I was shocked when I passed by there the other day and saw the Porteous name). I'm always looking for more and I see there are still many more to go.

|Goldrush||RE: Julia Porteous - birth?/marriage?|
Julia was an Allen. I believe that the marriage notice of Alva to Julia Phillips was simply a mistake. Grace Phillips did marry a Porteous and so that might have caused the wrong name to be used.
1900 census Nevada City, CA: George H. Allen 47 born England (Married 19 years)
Sarah J. Allen 50 born Wales (had 12 children, 7 still alive)
John R. Hopkins 30 born Wales. Son
Maggie Hopkins 23 born CA. Daughter
Henry Allen 16 born CA (George Henry)
Julia 12 born CA
Robert 10 born CA
Samuel J. Coltell 48
Thomas Laity 50
Edwin Hopkins 28
(Sarah Allen clearly was married before to a Hopkins)
Also Albert Herman Howe married Bernice Ewing Oct 15, 1913 in ID. They must have divorced because she remarried to Wiley Routt in 1962. Note in his obit that he had a sister named Leola Ewing so he may have married the sister of his brother in alw.
1910 Census Nevada City, CA
Alvah Porteous 29. Married 3 years (this would make the year of marriage as maybe 1907)
Julia Porteous 22 born CA. Parents both born England.
Hardy Porteous 2

Calaveras Prospect 7/21/1900: Alva Porteous married Julia Phillips on 7/15/1900.
Calaveras Prospect 6/30/1917: Robert L. Smith age 26, married Julia Etta Porteous age 29 on 6/23/1917.
And since someone gave the info for the death certificate and said her maiden name was Allen, could Julia have been married to someone by the name of Phillips first?
