Nikita Barlow
Thomas & Ellena Johnson steles
Greetings, Jim!

"Stele" isn't a typo, but an archaeological term often used in Gravestone Studies and Art History to refer to an upright, inscribed gravestone that typically has a thin profile and is narrower than it is tall. I've used it to underscore the historic and esthetic importance of these examples of early American craftsmanship. Colonial era gravestones were all hand-carved, some by professional sculptors, others by craftsmen and amateurs. Some other specific terms: a "ledger stone" is a large, flat gravestone covering a burial, and a "tombstone" is one associated with a tomb, rather than a grave per se. Anyway...

Best regards,
Nikita

RE: John Whitmore #71592896
Hello Jim: It has been years since I researched John Whitmore & although I have about 20 file boxes of records, alas.... they are not indexed.

I'm not really a document keeper, once I have seen them, it's on to the next part of the history.

I am sending you a website address which refers to some of the sources which I also found; but land records of Weathersfield, Stamford, Middletown and eventually Cambridge, Mass. would be the trail to follow.

Sorry, but I don't have another 30 years to go back there!

John's first land was acquired by what I think they called the "Act of Division" and his first sale of land was 1641 Weathersfield Land Records, I, 118. Good luck...Cheers, Shirleen

Interesting. I didn't realize that the Lightfoors had descendants.

Sure, I would be happy to take management of the memorials.

Thanks!

John (180168046) & Parnell Bartoll and Family
Hi Jim,

I am curious as to why you've added the Bartoll family? I'm not complaining, I am just curious. Are you related? In the area? What is your interest, if you don't mind, please?

I am John & Parnell's ninth grandson and live in Boston. I've been researching the line for a few years. I get up to Marblehead every now and then.

I would love to get a painting by William Thompson Bartoll, if I could find an affordable one. I was the person who located his grave in 2012 after it had become lost for some years.

Best,

David Bartol

Thanks for the transfer. I trust that he was NOT one of your ancestors?? I should have stated that when we communicated. Ray
