David
Thomas Halsey #7863184
Hi Tim, Thanks for the question. The Halsey Genealogy by Jacob Lafayette Halsey & Edmond Drake Halsey written in the late 1800's is invaluable. However, the research done by the Halsey Family Association of Southampton, which was headed up by Dr. Hugh Halsey in the 1980s & 1990s, has shown the Halsey Genealogy of Jacob & Edmund to be in error regarding the English parentage of Thomas Halsey, Sr. Their article, "THE ENGLISH ANCESTRY OF THOMAS HALSEY" by Raymond David Wheeler goes into great detail regarding this. Prior to this in the 1950s another author by the name of Herbert F. Seversmith wrote an article entitled, "Pre-American Ancestries Thomas Halsey of Southampton, L.I." where he also showed the English ancestors proposed by Jacob & Edmond Halsey to be wrong. It's not that Jacob & Edmond were sloppy in their research. Rather they used the records available to them at the time. -David

Yes, the stone is old but if you zoom in, you should be able to make out everything in the stone.

Darrell Gammon
on Ancestry.com?
Good day to you, Tim. My name is Darrell Gammon and I have been researching my family tree since 2006. Mostly I have right now been on Pucketts, my mother's family, well from her mom and dad' families are Puckett, Stigall, Stephen, and Webb. Would you be able to help me if you give me your email address so I could check out your family tree on Ancestry as a guest?

I'm sorry I haven't been able to get to you on this. I still don't have a good computer and it's hard to research using this small tablet. Hopefully that will change soon and I promise to find what I can and send to you. I am interested in the DNA testing. Do you mind telling me the cost?

RE: Toliver's and Puckett's
Hi, Tim. I'm afraid I can't give you any definitive answers. I have no death date for Thomas Puckett. Possibly he died prior to 1850 and his kids went to stay with the Toliver relatives in Arkansas. In that case, why they would not have stayed with their mother, Ann Eliz.(Lasater) Puckett I can't say. In any case, by 1860, they appear to have returned to Missouri. Again, sorry I can't be more help. :-(

RE: Samuel Puckett
Hello Tim,
Yes, it would be nice to share our family info. I know for sure my line goes to Zachariah King 1774-1854 and his wife Lucretia Puckett. My grandmother, Alice King Witt is a direct descendant.
My Witt family goes back through and beyond Elisha Witt of the Elisha Witt D.A.R. of Estill Co.
No, I have not had the DNA test. I have been researching the many family lines of mine and my wife for over 40 years now, and have slowed down on the research and have been compiling the accrued info into book form so as to keep our ancestor's memories alive.
However, I'm still open to sharing what I have and receiving anything I happen to run across.
Your John Puckett who married Lucretia Crawford are the only Pucketts I have in my files.

RE: Samuel Puckett
Hello Tim,
My info on the Puckett family is very limited. I have found some of the family via the internet beginning with a John Puckett & Elizabeth Elam in England, and works it's way down to a Samuel Puckett 1765-1820, born in Va who married Mary Lucinda Watkins. Samuel supposedly is the son of John Puckett and Lucretia Crawford. The dates and places are skeptical to say the least, so I don't put much credibility on it.
John and Lucretia are my 5th G Grandparents, and their daughter Lucretia married into my King family.
I don't have anything on them except their names, So... I'm afraid I can't be of much help to you.
I'll share anything I find, and would appreciate any info you can provide.
Don

I'll try to resolve this...I would be willing to remove my memorial or state this is tribute to them and not their actual burial place. Let me know how you feel about this.

RE: Jacob Puckett
I had some communication concerning this quite some time but I don't recall who. I don't know the purpose of the cemetery in North Carolina unless it is meant to be in remembrance of Jacob and Sarah Marshall Puckett. While I have not been to the Jacob Puckett cemetery in Virginia I know where it is and have been assured that Jacob and Sarah are buried at this cemetery. All of the immediate descendants of Jacob and Sarah grew up, lived and died near the area where the Cemetery in Virginia is located. And I am sure the land where the Jacob Puckett cemetery is located has remained in the Puckett family pretty much to this date. While the markers were and may still be I think Raleigh Puckett who is a descendant via William Riley Puckett may have been the person who had the memorial erected at the Virginia cemetery. Any conversation I have ever had with the Puckett family has never indicated that Jacob and Sarah are buried anywhere other than where the cemetery is in Virginia. And I might add, this cemetery is very near the Puckett Memorial cemetery where a number of Puckett descendants are also buried. I guess what I too would like to know is the significance of the memorial markers in North Carolina, when they were placed there and by whom. I wish I were able to enlighten you more.

RE: Susannah Poteet Dodd Marshall
I show her middle name as Poteet and her last name as Dodd but I got this information from other genealogies so the accuracy is only as good as the other person's research. I normally take other people's information as correct unless proven otherwise.

I am not an expert on the Crawfords. If I had my two Crawford books I might be able to help you, but they disappeared with some of my other books and things on my last move a few months ago. R.J.

Otho
Hi. I assume you are talking about Bessie's husband Otho Emerson. (I say that because he has a son named Otho and I have a brother Otho James.) I thought about that the other day but haven't had a chance to try. He was cremated and I'm not sure what happened to his ashes. I will see how Find-A-Grave will handle that as I've never done one before. I was so happy to see the site for Bessie Gilliard - it sure answered a lot of questions. Thanks.

Hi!

No I do not have profile on Ancestry that I know of! Lol. When I first started research more than 10 years ago - maybe closer to 15 - I used to submit family trees all the time. I realized what I was doing and stopped.

Yes I do show Sarah Loving but in the beginning I took some things as 'gospel' and added them. I do not have back up for this.

Yes, I show Jacob Sr married to Mary Crawford. I do not have a John married to Lucy. Who is this John??

I have recently heard of Crawford, brother to Jacob. But, I think his wife is named Clary.

Have you ever heard of a group called Campbell Cousin Research on yahoo?? I was recently contacted by Janis who belongs to that group. They are very interested in our William Crawford and the Jacobs. I'm sure they would love your input! I would love more of your input too! lol

If you think you might be interested in joining the group and their conversations send me an message on my email and I will forward it to Janis.

RE: William Crawford Puckett
Tim! So glad to hear from you!William Crawford is my gggg-grandfather! So hello cousin! Anyway, no, I do not know were Jacob's middle name came from. Yes, I am aware that WC was born before the marriage date. I got the information from another researcher and sadly she has since passed away. She was very through with her research. She made trips to the VA court houses and other places for documentation. I have a picture of his headstone which also lists the dates. Not sure what to say. Its possible that someone had the wrong date for the headstone but...
