Thanks. I do remember mentioning that on one of the memorials in that cemetery.

RE: Mattie Evalou & Lyman Olie Osam
Yes, I'm related to your grandfather as a distant cousin. I found all the information about him through and I'm afraid I don't know any more information other than what was included in his memorial. I had an ancestry account for about 4 years but no longer have an account so I'm afraid I can't look up who shared the information with me. My memory isn't as good as it used to be now that I'm getting older. I'm sorry I can't be of more help! I highly recommend getting an account with, you'll meet many more wonderful family members with all kinds of family history. I really enjoyed it.

RE: How did you do that?
Hi Paula,
Glad you asked! I love sharing this, because it will hopefully stop people from using chalk or other harmful methods of obtaining the grave info.

We use an LED flashlight. The one we used for a long time is the Nitecore EA4 LED flashlight, $69 from Battery Junction.
My husband just upgraded to a more expensive, higher power light last month. You could try any powerful LED flashlight (similar to our Nitecore which is 860 lumens) though, and see what results you get.

Our tips for this:
On sunny days, create a shadow - usually I will stand over the grave, hubby will shine the light on it and I will photo. I read where one woman brings an umbrella with her to the cemeteries, to create a shadow for the photos.

Shine from the left - We get the best results when shining from left to right. Just hold the light at the left edge of the grave, shining across the front, and you will see those letters and numbers just 'pop' right out at you.

We have used aluminum foil in the past, but since using the LED lights, have not had to 'foil' a grave again.

I hope this help you and I'd love to hear how it works out for you if you give it a try!

Keep in touch,

Thanks so much for locating and photographing this gravestone for me. I know it takes time to do it and I appreciate it so much. We live 2000 miles away and wouldn't see it otherwise.

RE: Phebe Rea Painter
I've been reading over the Painter information on the Internet adding details to the memorials. Palemon is called Phelon and Arion is called Orion, but I used the spellings from their stone. Lots of family notes from "The Painter History" by Sarah Angeline Painter Kern (1971). If you could find that on the Internet, (IF you don't already have it!) I think you would find a lot of helpful information in it.

Hi Paula, thanks for your offer of information, but I know of that resource--there are some nearer and dearer that would be first in line if I'm paying for information. I'm just trying to exhaust the free resources... and wonderful volunteers such as yourself!

Paula, many thanks for all your help, and for including the article links. I'll have to head out there to view the remnants of those old cemeteries--I had no idea! I ended up leaving Mr. Sherburne's memorial at Bluff City, with a note about his not actually being there.
