Hi Mark-

Of course you may. I am honored. I am only sorry that the photo is so poor - the sun was at a bad angle.

I do not have any way of darkening it, but I have cut out his name and put it up separately. I hope this helps.

Best,
Joy

RE: P.S to Madge....
Sorry! I was thinking of the son, John D Fiederlein who married Mary Katherine McCabe.

I just looked and realized I never did find the marriage for Alva and John...just assumed it was around 1933/4.

I'm wondering how Paul Alexander died so young, and whether or not he was married?

Hi Mark,
you are welcome! If interested in finding information on your own, Re: Shilstone wedding, etc. this is a wonderful site:
http://fultonhistory.com/Fulton.html

Type in the name and click on exact phrase (saves useless looking) It's free.

There are many articles about their early lives, children, church activities, etc. (or any other New York area people you might be interested in.

Fero
Hi. Somehow I got a message you sent to JANMARY. I did the photo and memorial at Fero's when I walked the cemetery trying to document the headstones for findagrave. Fero Memorial Gardens is the correct name. I wish there was a way to correct the others and combine into one.

P.S to Madge....
Hi Mark,
After I "sent" last note, I realized I'd neglected to add Alva's maiden name...Shilstone.

RE: Madge Fiederlein
Hi Mark,
Since I emailed I discovered the name on the sign at the cemetery is: Fero Memorial Gardens Cemetery; (Fero is in smaller letters)
Someone else made a memorial for Madge under that cemetery name, along with Paul Alexander. (Paul died so young! Do you know what happened? His marker says in Memory of....is he buried elsewhere?

I do have a tree on Ancestry and am distantly related to John. I'm Jan on Chazotte tree.

I have a fun news article about John's harrowing birth in a blizzard on my tree. He married Alva Dupuy about 1933, and they had two sons, John Dupuy Fiederlein and Thomas Alva Fiederlein. John worked as an assembler at Western Electric, and they lived in Sea Cliff, Nassau, New York. They were both very involved in their church, John serving as superintendent of the Children's sunday school and other roles. They divorced prior to 1947 and he married Madge in 1949. Alva remarried and also lived in Florida. John and Alva were in the paper frequently until 1944 then disappeared...and I couldn't find them...until today! Thank you for making the memorial!
Jan.

WARGRAVE
RE: Torevell, Joseph E
Hello Mark,

Beside taking pictures of wargraves, I have now started with my wife a small business in which we are placing dayfresh flowerboucquets on wargraves, memorials, cemeteries from Ypres to the Somme. I have started this business due to the many requests from people around the world.

This service can be found on our website: http://www.wargrave.eu/

In the customer section you will find an example of a commemoration I did last week for a Scottish client in Dunkirk.

If this service would interest you please drop me an email: wargrave.eu@telenet.be

It would be great if you could share this with people you know.

best regards,
Claude Verstraete

Mark - thank you for escorting Steven back to his homeland. I didn't know Steven but he is buried a few feet from my mom. I noticed his gravesite and how very young he was when he passed. When visiting my mother I always stop to show my respects to a hero. From my research I don't think he had siblings and his parents have passed on. I just feel an need to know more about this young man who gave his life for all of us. I too would love to see a picture. If not if you can tell me how it came that you escorted home I would be grateful. I don't want this young man to be forgotten. His memory will life on and I hope to connect with whomever may have known him. God bless all who have served and who are now so bravely protecting us.

Dear Mr. Foster,

Thank you for being the Escort for Steven E. Scharlach. Thank you for your service to our country.
An acquaintance of mine and his friends are trying to get a picture of Steven for the Vietnam Memorial Wall of Faces. One friend is checking with Camp Pendleton for a picture. Another is contacting his unit and CO.
Would please send me your email address or, if you prefer, I will send the friend's email to you in case he needs it for his efforts to get a picture of Steven.

Thank you very much.

Your Mom's Memorial
Dear Mark,

My condolences to you and your family at the passing of your mother. I have transferred your mom's memorial to your care and am more than happy to do so. Just from the little I've learned of her, she sounded like a wonderful woman. And may I say as a Nana myself, I love the inscription on your mom's stone - "Best Nana Ever".

Please know that your family will be in my prayers.

Sincerely,
Emily

Transferred-I only take these on to put them right. The guy who added them originally was a 'numbers man'-you'll still see hundreds with no bio whatsoever!

Robert Smillie at Cambridge
Photographing names on the Tablets of the Missing is not always easy, especially those that are high up. It is unlikely that when screen walls-as we call them in England-were designed with a view to them being photographed.

The staff at Cambridge will, on request, enhance a name with special sand though sometimes their stocks of this are low. Often, very tall step-ladders are needed and for safety reasons, depending who is on duty, members of the public are not permitted to use them. Furthermore, as the refurbishment of the nearby visitor center will not be complete until October 2013, it is even more difficult to secure the loan of the ladders-they are presently kept a considerable distance away from the memorial wall in the temporary visitor center.

A couple of months ago, I purchased an i-pad specifically because the camera function would give better results than any of the digital cameras I own, and even though I have since bought a new digital camera, the i-pad is still preferred.

The best results are obtained shooting at an angle along the name to ensure that the full inscription is captured. It would never be easy to crop just the individual name, but I am working on a way to highlight the required name with a photo-editing program.

I am happy to make available any of my photos to anyone who wishes to improve on them.

Geoff Gillon November 2012.
