MURDER AT KEOKUK

Alderman Tim Hickey Kills His Former Business Partner
Keokuk, Aug 2.- Early Tuesday Tim Hickey, alderman from the Second ward, shot Michael J. Real, his former partner, in the latter's saloon, four shots taking effect, causing death early in the afternoon. Nobody was present at the fight, but it is supposed business misunderstanding caused the trouble. Shortly after the trouble Hickey went to police headquarters and gave himself up.

When Hickey was told of the condition of Real he said over and over;" Oh this is a regrettable affair." and was nearly frantic, walking restlessly about the prison in mental agony, I will never get over this". he exclaimed.

Memorial I set up for my grandfather. I didn't find the one you set up because you used what was on his headstone and I used his full name. So, what do we do now. I have his service picture on there and am in the process of adding his deceased wife an 4 of his 6 children's pictures. You have my GGrandfather and GGrandmother and his sibblings entered.

What would you like to do? Is there a way to combine the memorials?

You were first so it is your choice.

God Bless,

Diana

Sue,

I have a photo of Mary GARRITY McGettigan 116608145 and James McGettingan 116608079 memorial stone. The last name spelling on the stone is MacGettigan. I did find a newspaper obituary for James but haven't had time to upload it yet.

Thank you for all of the work you do on Find A Grave.

Catherine Hise
Sue,

Catherine Marie Wilte Hise, Wife of Roscoe has matching dates with my Marie Catherine Rea Hise, wife of Roscoe. Do we have a mismatch of data here possibly? This is in Oakland Cemetery in Keokuk. Marie is my cousin, she died 6 weeks after her marriage to Roscoe Hise and is buried by her mother Mary Ann Barrett Rea. Would like to clarify so we can merge these memorials if needed. Thanks!

Amelia

I wonder if I may have permission to use your grave marker photo for Philip Heiser on my family website. See http://www.freienmuth-shortridge.com/freienmuth/freienmuth-cemeteries.php to see how I'm using the photos on the site. I will give you credit for the photo.

Thank you.

Charles Keefe
KEEFE= father
The Keefe stone which has only FATHER is that of my grandfather, his name was EDWARD CHARLES KEEFE,born in Beardstown, Cass, Illinois, the son of Irish emigrants Patrick O'Keefe, who served the Union during the Civil War and Grace O'Keefe (nee Kent). Edward Charles Keefe was married to Katherine Anastasia Murphy. She was born in Keokuk, Lee, Iowa, the daughter of Patrick M. Murphy, another Irish emigrant (1851) and Maria Lucy Brady, daughter of Thomas and Mary Brady, also Irish emigrants, Maria was born in Marietta, Washington County, Ohio. Edward Charles Keefe, my father was named for his father, and he was one of nine children, THE ONLY SON. I have the listing of all of the senior KEEFE family children. I want you to know your endeavor is appreciated, and if I may, I would like to see an update of info. I plan to visit Keokuk, this summer. The Keefe's, Cosgrove's, Collisson's, Murphy's, Brady's, Kelly's, Furlong's, McDowell's, Donnelly's,Delaney's. It seems as if the Irish arrived and married. Thank you for your work. I took a look at Jacob Blum in Oakland Cemetery but could not tell you for sure that he is the son of Jacob Blum in St Paul Cemetery. He had a son by the same name but have no definite information. I would guess his is his son but it would only be a guess. Sorry I couldn't help, Dave

RE: Lindstrum
Appreciated your note. I understand your frustration. I know that one caretaker I spoke with when I called the office (I was told there are only two for 80 acres and little money) was kind enough to go out to my GGGGP's gravesite and verify that there were stones. He told me that one had "rolled down the hill". When Karen went out to photograph, all three were off their bases. She was able to get the caretakers to move the stones back to the plot I definitely want to make a trip to Keokuk and see what I can do to help restore their grave markers. Karen appears to be very through when she photographs. She posted groups shots, individual and close-ups.I try to do the same. As I might have told you before, I had been looking for H. McMillan's grave site for two years and was thrilled you had created his memorial. You are fortunate that at least there are records to work with. Keep bugging the city....that saddens me so to hear some stones are used as pathways.

RE: Welch, McGrath
Sue:

You beat me to the punch!!!. I did send you a transfer request for Michael E. McGrath. The Michael you transferred to me is actually (I think) his father. Do you want back? If not, perhaps you might wish to transfer who I beleive is Michael E.'s mother, Bridgette (sp?) McGrath.

AGAIN.....THANK YOU SO MUCH!! I am hoping that a photo volunteer will be taking pictures soon of Henry and Louisa and a J Welch, their son-in-law. A caretaker at the cemetery was kind enough to go out to the plot and verify that there are stones. If I had only known this 18 mo. ago when my husband and I were on our way to Colorado. Stopped in Ottumwa and Marshalltown to do some research.....my paternal side hails from Iowa.

RE: Henry McMillan
Thank you for the transfer! I am so pleased that you created a memorial for Henry. I have been trying to locate his grave site for two years! This find also led me to his wife, my 3 GGM, their daughter and her family. I am submitting transfer requests for the entire group...Sarah Welch, Katherine Welch McGrath and her husband Michael...just to give you a heads up. AGAIN, THANK YOU, and hope you are mending from your surgeries.
