Richard Cantrell # 75617345
As the progeny of Richard Cantrell, it is not only our right, but our obligation to protect the legacy of our ancestor. We descendants strive to present only data that has been chronicled by authorities. To act otherwise is not only irresponsible: it is ignoble.

We, therefore, request that you remove the picture you added to the memorial of Richard Cantrell posthaste. No such picture is known to exist: no such picture has ever been documented.

We know that just as we do not want to perpetuate misinformation, you do not want to perpetuate misinformation. We know that you, as do we, want to endow your descendants with a legacy based on knowledge, not on supposition.

We understand that your intent was not to affront Cantrell family members. We are aware that enthusiasm sometimes clouds judgement. You found an interesting picture that was somewhat close to the time period of Cantrell's lifespan and adjudged that it would add interest and color to the memorial.

Certainly, it was not your objective to mislead. In all innocence, you did not perceive that many would accept without reasoning or questioning the authenticity of the picture and would adopt it as an intrinsic component of their lineage.

Due to that fallacious assumption, we respectfully request that you delete the inappropriate picture that compounds the other grossly inaccurate material included on the memorial. Succinctly, there is no documentation that the picture is of Richard Cantrell, nor is there any documentation whatsoever that Richard Cantrell is buried at Gloria Dei (Old Swedes) Church Burial Ground.

Several of us have visited the church and have spoken with employees who work zealously to preserve the validity of the official records. The Register of Burials reflects no record that Richard Cantrell nor any other members of the  Cantrell / Cantrill family are buried on the premises. Age of the Register does not factor as a reason that the Cantrell burial is not inscribed: the Register records many burials that occurred before Cantrell's estimated 1753 death. T

Additionally, we must question the rationale that the prominent Richard Cantrell would have been buried in a Swedish cemetery when he was not Swedish. Some would answer that his daughter-in law, wife of Joseph, was of the Swedish Heath family. Again, that is an erroneous assumption: while Joseph Cantrell's wife was named Catherine, she was not a Heath. The Heath family has maintained meticulous Pedigree Charts for centuries and can find no documentation that Joseph Cantrell married a Heath. So, the question remains: why would the prominent Richard Cantrell have been buried in a Swedish cemetery? The answer: he was not. His burial place remains a mystery.

Thank you in advance for your cooperation.

RE: My appreciation and respect
You are quite welcome. When we visit a cemetery, we take "extra" pictures and especially those with surnames in our family trees just in case they may be related. If they are not, I like for family to have them, and usually when someone requests an edit, they are researching their family and are related. So, I am very happy these two are with you!

Blaylocks
Linda, thank you for contacting me! Yes, you are right about Lititia being buried there, and I feel sure William David is right beside her, but with an unmarked stone. George Miller's book CEMETERIES AND FAMILY GRAVEYARDS IN HAYWOOD COUNTY, NC lists her as being there, so she evidently has a stone that was legible in 1979 when he published the book. I'm guessing her husband's was already illegible. When I get a chance, I'll try to go up to the cemetery and see if I can locate them. Nine Blaylocks buried in that cemetery do not yet have memorials on Find A Grave. Do you have more names to enter, which might include them? If not, I can email them, with the dates, to you next week, and you can create memorials if you'd like. Just email me at the address on my homepage and I'll send them to you. Thank you for striving for accuracy--there are too many errors on here from careless work! Fran

RE: 126580487 AGNES MATTINGLY
You are very welcome. I feel relatives should have a priority in caring for memorials of family members which is clear in your additions to Agnes. And something I meant to do sooner I transferred Robert to you.

Take care

Kathy Anne
Mattingly name
Hi, Linda,
I Googled the origins of name Mattingly, and it showed a map of the US with the prevalence of the name Mattingly over all the states, and Kentucky overwhelmingly has more Mattingly's than any other state. Perhaps it is the origin of the family that you are looking for, long ago.

Kathy Anne
Mattingly name
Hi, Linda,
There are people named Mattingly in Bardstown, Kentucky, probably for hundreds of years. I don't know if this will help you, but it is an unusual name.

Thank you for the excellent photograph of the headstone of Joshua Landish. It supplies a birthday, which the memorial and other records were lacking. It's really a nice photo. Thanks, Kathy Anne
