RE: Stanton Pemberton ## 78397189
There are many mistakes in the text. That was a enumeration error the 1970's. It is hard to tell that is it is an E, but it really is, confirmed by the marriage document. There are 2 children next to Eliza with the memorial name Morrison, but they are Pemberton children. You can tell in the photos. I'm still working on those.

RE: Stanton Pemberton ## 78397189
Eliza A. Pemberton married Eli Morrison on 12 Aug 1830, in Washington, VA. They were among the earliest settlers in the Oakland area, locating in 1831 with her parents. Eliza's dates are - died 10 Aug 1832 at age 20Y 2M 18D. Her find a grave memorial is #78397178. There are also 2 babies that on a memorial have the Morrison name, but I found the stones and they are Pembertons. Then they are listed again, slightly similarly as Pembertons. There are so many mistakes on these memorials. I'm trying to get it fixed.

My user name on Ancestry is 1md_shepherd.

RE: Stanton Pemberton ## 78397189
I think I figured it out. I couldn't understand who Eliza Morrison was - she is on the same stone with Sally and Stanton. I determined that she is their daughter. I go that from the Coles county history. She is the first person buried in the oldest cemetery in the area. No one had her on a tree in ancestry.

I am a member of other Pemberton questions and do have an Ancestry account - where do I go?

Thanks so much!

I'e been working to photograph Stanton's side of the stone in Berry Cemetery. I noticed that you left a flower on his memorial page. I have some questions and wondered if you are related?

RE: Oh How Neat, Suzie !!!
'Fraid so, thru his son Sam # 96602683 who continually gets confused in what few records exist with his Uncle Sam, old Mjr. Philip's younger brother who kicked up his heels in Culpeper a while before moving on to Frederick where he died.

Oh How Neat, Suzie !!!
Your news brightens this day (9-11)...considerably.

Though the dates I have in my records differ, her eldest brother was born that year, and the Rev Slaughter listed her as having been born after Ann C. b. 19 Aug 1772 who married Reuben Fry, that just has to be Sarah, daughter of James Slaughter #97766427 and Susannah(Clayton)#97766132. Thank you so very much for letting me know. So few of the family stones survive.

PS I made a photo request for her just now to try and save this stone and hopefully we'll be able to read what it has to tell us.

OK, will do. I am on ancestry but do not have subscrip. at this time so am unable to contact people through them. If you will, I welcome you to write via my email. Is much easier ... and more private. Thanks for all of your input! Shirley

Hi Susan,

My name is Deb Semmens, and I believe we may have a common ancestor.

My great grandfather was adopted twice in his young life. Through DNA I have narrowed down his general family. He has ties to the Porter, Spies, Trego and Gaffney families.

On Ancestry I have a New Ancestor Discovery for Elizabeth Gaffney and Henry Alms. I believe that Elizabeth's mother and father are probably the common ancestors.

I would really like to connect my Great Grandfather to his biological family. Here is what I know:

Through my research I have determined that my paternal G Grandfather, Alva Wilbourn DOB 3/2/1889 DOD 7/15/1916, was adopted not once but twice in his life. He was raised in Cass County, by Thomas Wilbourn and Cynthia Herron Wilbourn, just outside of Anita.

But he does have several ties to Aberdeen South Dakota.....that is where he died, and a newspaper article suggests that his mother might have been in the area.

MY Ggrandfather came to live with the Wilbourn's when he was about 4 years old. Previously he had been taken in by Oscar C Wilkins living around Cumberland.

I have DNA matches to the Trego, Wilkins, Spies, Gaffney and Porter families all of Cass County.

I think that Alva was probably a child of one of these families. Oscar took him in to his home for some reason, and when he couldn't continue to care for him he went to live with the Wilbourn's.

If you have any information on any of these families, I would love to talk with you.

My email address is

Thank you for caring about family history!

Your Grandmother:
Hello, Susan,
I want you to know that I consider to be an *honor* to add the beautiful memorial that you created for your grandmother, Sarah Matilda (Watson) Ellis, to my Porter family tree.

Thank-you, Susan, for carrying on the wonderful tradition in your family, of "holding" the stories and rich history of your ancestors, for the many descendants to treasure, now and in the future.
Peace & blessings,

Sarah Matilda (Watson) Ellis. Find A Grave Memorial# 109569742
-- -- -- -- --
NAME: Sarah Matilda (Watson) Ellis.
BIRTH: Sep. 30, 1856; Adair County, Kentucky, USA.
DEATH: Dec. 16, 1892; Nathrop, Chaffee County, Colorado, USA.
Sarah Matilda Watson was the daughter of William Watson, blacksmith, in Adair County, Kentucky and his wife Sarah Smith.
William H. and Sarah Matilda Ellis traveled out of Adair Co. after the Civil War. Their trek was long, far and arduous, first to Indian Territory, then on to Territorial Colorado. They had five, possibly six children.
Sarah is buried in Nathrop,Chaffee County, Colorado located in on the Arkansas River. This area has many hot springs which were originally used for consumption patients. It is believed that her husband, William, brought her to Colorado for this reason. She is buried in Centerville Cemetery alongside one child, 'Robert' of about eight years old. Both the child and mother Sarah died of consumption. I believe this is not the correct name of the child, as her son, Robert, is found later in partnership on a ranch that was founded during the Land Rush, in Kay County, Oklahoma.
Children are: John, born Adair, KY; Myrtle, born Kansas; Robert, born Indian Territory (AK); Unknown child, born Indian Territory, daughter Jesse, born Indian Territory (OK); Marcus, born Ringo, Indian Territory, OK.
As yet unverified family stories place them in Indian Territory with William H. Ellis being an Indian Agent on the Cherokee Nation.
In about 1910 William Watson paid in full for a Homestead in Chaffee County, Colorado. Though listed as a miner on many of the census, I believe it was to pay off the land, which may have been passed down to children Jesse and Marcus.
Her name was always spoken with this phrase, "Sarah Matilda Watson of Adair County, Kentucky". Without this respectful statement, I might never have found my family roots in Adair.
So, "Sarah Matilda Watson, of Adair County, Kentucky", I nod in respect to my Great Grandmother, one of the pioneers of Colorado." ... SOURCE: Susan McLaughlin. Find A Grave Memorial# 109569742
