William Yonkee - St. Gabriels
I just saw your photo request. I am unsure if you are aware that St. Gabriel is a potters field with very few markers and I've learned that the office doesn't always tell people that at the time they call for information. Have you been able to confirm with the office if there is a marker? If no marker exists please let me know so I can mark a problem on the request for others to see in the event someone can get there before I do. Every once in a while people have been able to reach someone at the office willing to go to St. Gabriel and flag the location for us to find them but it usually takes a bit of work and luck. Please let me know and I'll add it to my list for spring if it's still listed.

William Leon Laflin, Sr.: 128071874
Please let me know the status of replacing the current memorial (obit) with the one compiled by Bill Laflin's children that I submitted to you twice. Here is the memorial again that we wish to replace the newspaper obit that is currently on his memorial.

William “Bill” Leon Laflin was born on January 10, 1921, in Cement, Oklahoma, one of seven children born to loving parents George Clarence and Mary Marcella Laflin. In the summer of 1923, the family moved to Chickasha, Oklahoma. In 1934, the family moved to San Antonio, Texas, due to the failing health of Bill’s father. After his untimely passing, the family moved back to Chickasha in 1938.

In his early school years, Bill Laflin attended St. Joseph’s Academy. When the family moved to San Antonio, he attended and graduated from Central Catholic High School. In 1942, Bill graduated from Oklahoma University with a BS in Electrical Engineering. While in the military, Bill studied Radar Applications at Harvard University and at MIT. Following WW II, Bill returned to Oklahoma University where he achieved a Masters in Electrical Engineering in 1947.

Bill was very active in social and professional organizations throughout his life. While attending Central Catholic High School in Texas he competed in football and basketball. While attending Oklahoma University, he competed on the boxing team, being undefeated in the 120-135 pound weight class. From the age of 12, Bill was active in the Boy Scouts of America and the Eagle Scouts. He shared his passion with his sons. In 1938 at OU, Bill was recruited into the Theta Kappa Phi national Catholic fraternity. He was elected president of the fraternity in 1941. He was a lifetime member of the OU Alumni Association and organized a chapter in New Orleans, Louisiana. Throughout his lifetime, he was a member of Braeburn Country Club, The Houston Petroleum Club, Houston Geological Society, Houston Engineering Society, and the Knights of Columbus.

In 1942, Bill enlisted in the Army Signal Corps. During WW II, he spent 10 months in the Hawaiian Islands training radar operating crews. He worked on the 13 Pacific Islands as a Radar Instructor with the Army Anti-Aircraft Artillery units. He was stationed in Okinawa, Japan, for one year after the war was over. During that time, he was an Essential Signal Corps Officer. In 1946, he returned to the states and received an honorable discharge as a Captain. He continued in the Signal Corps Reserves until June 1951.

On September 2, 1946, Bill married the love of his life, Margaret “Marge” Kay Elias in Bristow, Oklahoma. Together they had 8 children: 6 boys and 2 girls. In 1947, the two attended OU where Bill studied Electrical Engineering and Marge studied Music. After Bill graduated, the couple moved to Syracuse, New York, where he worked for General Electric. While there, Bill designed a radar system that was implemented by the US Air Force. As NY was cold and both were more comfortable in the warmer climate, Bill moved his family to Abilene, Texas, where he joined Halliburton in the Logging and Perforating Department, retiring as an officer at the age of 65.

Bill Laflin was a dedicated family man despite the extensive traveling required for his job with Halliburton. He spent his time at home helping his wife and sharing his many life experiences and passions with his children. Bill and his sons spent many weekends with the Boy Scouts camping, fishing, and earning scout badges. He doted on his two girls, wanting only the best for their futures. His children blessed him with 13 grandchildren. He was a very proud husband, father, and grandfather.

What is the status of either replacing the new memorial I submitted a couple weeks ago or transferring the memorial to me? Same for his wife and son?

The epitaph under Our Parents reads
A sleep in Jesus
Blessed sleep from which none ever wake to weep.

Sorry it took me so long to get this to you.

Talleys

Archibald and Rachel Talley were on opposite sides of the stone. Facing Our Parents side he was on the right and she was on the left. The wording on the stone was a phrase, I have to go back up sometime and I will see what it says.
