RE: John Fickel photo
Harriet Merris 'Hattie' Jenkins-Stanley-Fickel
Birth 6 Feb 1842 in Elkhart, Elkhart, Indiana, USA
Death 3 Jan 1916 in LeClair, Scott County, Iowa

By 1860 she was in Scott County Iowa with her parents, Eli and Caroline Jenkins, siblings Milton, Enoch, Wesley, Sarah, Lucetta.

She married Herman J Stanley in 1871, and by 1880 they were in Mills County where he died in 1888 (buried in Malvern). They had two daughters, Nellie and Carrie. Nellie - see below. Carrie married Fred Smith. She died in 1914 and is buried in Glendale Cemetery, Leclaire, Scott County.

She then married Joshua Fickel, a widower. Her daughter Nellie Stanley married John M Fickel, the son of Joshua Fickel. The last historical record we have of Hattie and Joshua is 1915 in Princeton, Scott County.

Now, a book called Tombstone Records of Scott County has Hattie in it, died 3 Jan 1916 (page 166). However, have found other discrepancies in that book and no other record of her death.

Does this 'mini' history help? Thanks for all this.

RE: John Fickel photo
Thanks for looking! Took me years to finally locate what happened to Joshua after his second wife died, I suppose it will be years before we find where they put him!

RE: John Fickel photo
Thank you!!! Joshua and his wife were both living in the 1915 census for Princeton. Iowa Gravestones says Hattie died in Jan 1916. Ironically, Hattie (Harriet) was the step-mother of John M Fickel, but she was the mother of John's wife Nellie. John's father Joshua was a widower who married Hattie who was a widow. And they lived with John and Nellie!

John Fickel photo
Thank you for taking the photo.

Do you go to that cemetery often? I am trying to find John's father, Joshua, who probably died after 1915, his wife Nellie, Joshua's wife Hattie (Harriet). And more than likely if you see a Fickel stone, it belongs in the family.

Would appreciate it if you happen to find them! And thanks again.

Kent Gebhard
Preacha Carber

Thanks for your note on this person and not finding a grave- and the Carber family member you spoke with.

I believe the person who crated the memorial copied the info from this source:

Which does have a Preacha who died/ was buried 8-15-40, she buried is in the plot with Frank H. and Melinda Walrod Carber- Melinda is my distant cousin.

From the 1942 Walrod Genealogy I find their children were:

Melinda, bn Sept. 9, 1879, md Aug. 14, 1895 to Frank H. Carber. Their children were George A., Bernice, Blanche, Margaret, Russell and Frank C.

I am speculating that Preacha is a mangled spelling of Bernice or Blanche.

I'll do some more research and see what I can find; if you can get access to the original sexton's records that would be great.
