It is on the death certificate as I have posted on the memorial. Whoever gave the information at the time of death probably got it wrong. I can post a note to that effect that other sources state his middle initial as "J", if you like.

Hi Ross, Added Nellie Frazier Roberts & husband Frank & photos for them. The only record I found that matched said Nellie died Trumbull Co. Do you know if that's right?

I sent all this info on to Mark Browning who is a very very nice contributor and always makes edits and adds bio info. I think he just hasn't gotten to the edits yet but he will. he is very reliable.

There is a family tree on ancestry that has William 'Billy' Bowman born 1826 Pennsylvania married Phebe Clark 1850 Moundsville. This is a completely different family and children are Wiley Clark, Elmer D, Ruth and Jessie B. By the 1880 census, family living in Iowa. Phebe is shown born in W. Virginia (which of course would be VA then.) So back to Harriet Haines being correct on all those records for children we found. Hooray! Phebe Clark was born in Marshall County to Hezekiah Clark and Margaret J.Ryan.

|genieresearcher||one more Bowman child...|
On the 1870 census, a Sarah Ann Bowman age 18 appears with William and Harriet and children. However she is not listed on the 1860 census with them, only children Mary E and Edward. On the 1860 census Harriet is listed as born in Ohio...maybe they married in OH? But on 1870 census Harriet listed born Virginia.

it's fun to team up with someone on research. I found all those children but on Edward's death record 1923, parents William Bowman and H. Haines. On Lou Ella Bowman Burt's WV death cert gives mother Harriet HAINES. And again on Mary Elizabeth Bowman Reeves, father William Bowman, mother is Harriet Haines. I think perhaps this Phebe Clark married yet a different William Bowman perhaps?

Application for military headstone for this William Bowman was made in 1938 by a Mrs. W. P. Samuels of Wheeling to be shipped to Peninsula Cemetery. And obviously it was moved to Greenwood where stone photographed. This William died December 12, 1912, according to the application, however I think 1912 is error and it's 1916. which makes it the William we've been discussing. Here is another clue...Anna Burt married William Samuels in 1919 Wheeling. She is probably William's grand daughter, daughter of Lou Ella Bowman and Henry Fulton Burt. Lou Ella's memorial 129924999 shows daughter of William Bowman and Harriet Haines. She may just have had the death year wrong for her father perhaps, 1916 not 1912.

OK Ross, so I am clear...the Harriet Bowman who died in 1898 is not Haines but Clark? which means the daughter Mary Elizabeth Bowman Reeves who is linked to her is not correct? The memorial for William with the Civil War stone is the same one who died in 1887 and was originally in Peninsula. Both he and Harriet were moved to Greenwood according to Peninsula burial list info.
They were in same plot in Peninsula so shall we presume they are spouses? However...Harriet's WV death record says she was married. so guess could not be wife of the William who died in 1887? That's why I thought that Harriet was wife of the William who died in 1916.

The William who died in 1916 WV death record gives parents as Carlton Bowman and Polly Winesburg/Weinsburg. Is he not the husband of Harriet Haines? The contributor for his memorial declined though DC indicates Carlton.

Ella Reeves Zane is my great grandmother. I have assumed that William and Sarah are her parents for years without any good documentation. Is there any documentation you have come by to conclude they are her parents? Thanks

|Terry Magyar||memorial edits|
I rec'ed yr edits. Thanks. I'm not sure how addicted you are to genealogy, but I have it bad.
I have a free, private web site for Belmont Co. research. I'll send u an invitation if you are interested.
Me and three others are adding the names from Esther Powell's book are transcriptions and making sure these names have memorials at find a grave.
I have a second book for veterans. As I get time, I make sure they have a memorial.
When time permits, I visit Belmont Co. and use the cell phone app to upload photos and record the tombstone gps location.
I would like you to join the web site and if you are interested help make memorials for vets or a specific cemetery. Pls advise.

|Debbie DuBrucq||RE: Starling Thornton|
Good Afternoon Ross,
You didn't include the memorial, so I am going to take a little stab here. Are you speaking of the memorial 39229608 (John Sterling "Starlin" Thornton)? I do not have a Lttleberry Thornton associated with this line, but that doesn't mean it isn't so. Just means I haven't found it yet. Lol
Maybe this memorial 90737449 (John Thornton)? This is also a possibility for the same reason as given above.
I am trying to make the connections to Starlin Thornton, who is also buried on Thornton's Mountain in Franklin County, Virginia. The name Littleberry is very prevalent within my tree and I know it is coming from somewhere, just not sure where it originated.
My email address is firstname.lastname@example.org. I would appreciate anything that you can help me with, so that I can add it to my tree. I am a DAR member and would like to add an associated affliation under Starling Thornton but have not found enough information sufficient to validate that I have it correct. I do believe that the name “Starlin” was a nickname to the family name “Sterling” but again, haven't been able to provide that tidbit.
