Hi,

I filled your photo request for Annie Ferguson Memorial# 87231928 today. When I went to upload the photo I noticed how washed out the photo was. I darkened a bit to make it advisable. When I go back, I will make sure to take a better photo for you.

Hello:

I notice you are connected to Allen gravesites in Holy Name Cemetery. I was wondering if yours are connected to mine in any way- the family of Martin and Mary (McHugh) Allen.

Took the pic today and saw that he was buried there with Helen. Figured that perhaps you weren't aware of him or where he was buried. Glad you like it, Peg!!! Ron

Peggy,

No problems. I used a Section plot map from the cemetery office to verify the location. I also walked 3-4 sections around it to make sure I wasn't "looking like a man", as my wife says.

Peggy,

I have transferred Shelby and Robert's memorial to you. I would rather have family manage their memorials. If there are others, I would gladly transfer them also.

Hello, could this possibly be Shelby Jean Doxey

It could be. The name came from the books kept at the cemetery office and could be misspelled. If you are confindent about the spelling, I would gladly make the correction.

this is a large cemetery with lots of flat stone areas and 3 mausoleums. If you call and get a section and lot, we can probably find it.

Thanks, Peg. It's not that hard to find the unmarked graves though. Most of the markers are engraved with the block, section, grave, etc., so it's just a matter of counting them down. LOL

I think the best thing to do is to call the office and ask for each person you're looking for in HNC. If they give you a specific location I can go and take a pic of those locations. I'll see what's at the sites that the web site gave me and we'll see what turns up. The web site doesn't have all the names of everyone buried in the cemetery.

Most of the graves are marked with their location engraved on the base, in a corner, or on the side. They're in order, so it's easy to track down a specific grave. The blocks are marked and I have a map of where each block can be found. One of the supervisors responsibilities is letting the workers know where to dig...LOL

grave notations
Hi, Peggy!

In HNC they designate the grave as follows:

Block- the main location of a specific area.

Section- a sub-division of the block

Grave- where the grave lies within the sub-division

Plot- where in relation to the grave a person is buried such as 1a or 2b, etc.

Hope I explained that clearly. It can be confusing, especially when you consider that the cemetery has an old section and a newer section. There are two Block As, Bs, Cs...all through H. There are six Ks. In order to determine which block you need you have to defer to the section as all the blocks have different section designators. You get used to it after awhile...LOL Ron

Peggy, I made a print out of all the Dyas graves from HNC. I'll check them out the next time I'm there taking pics. There are 4 names:

Name Cemetery Burial Date Location
ANNA DYAS Holy Name Cemetery 07/26/1921 Blk-L Sec-50B Gr-1-2 1A
Baby Mathew DyasHoly Name Cemetery 08/04/1979 Blk-I Sec-B Gr-4 1G
WILLIAM J DYAS Holy Name Cemetery 07/07/1917 Blk-F Sec-E Gr-34 2C
WILLIAM J DYAS Holy Name Cemetery 07/07/1917 Blk-F Sec-E Gr-34 2D

I'll see what is at the two sites we don't already know about (L and I).

Peggy, I'm so sorry that the graves are unmarked. If I come across any other graves bearing the surnames Dyas, Shippey, or Collins I'll take some pics for you. Like I said, I live just a few blocks from the cemetery. Hopefully we can find some marked graves next time. LOL Have a great 4th. Ron

RE: Winifred Collins unmkd grave
Hi, Margaret!

I love the heat and I only live a few blocks from Holy Name Cemetery. I can deal with heat much better than cold. I was trained for it in the army, so it doesn't phase me in the least. Perhaps you need to call the cemetery office in order to verify the actual location. I verified with the cemetery supervisor that the actual spot in the photo is actually the spot stated in the requests, but he can't verify if the person requested is actually at this site. He works in the field, not the office. I too am sad that the sites are unmarked. But it's common in HNC. The web site, I've been told, is very accurate as far as giving locations of those listed. The only negative is that it doesn't contain ALL the records of everyone buried in HNC. They're still working on it though. I will keep an eye out for the names you are looking for, and if I come upon a grave bearing one of those names, I'll snap a photo and send it to you. Dyas is uncommon. Collins is more common. Who knows...we may hit on something. Ron

RE: Dyas/Shippey-Holy Name Cem.
Hi, Margaret!
I noted the plot location on the photo caption. Perhaps a call to the cemetery office could let you know exactly whom is buried in this grave.

You can also try this web site, but it's not always updated. It's the locator for the archdiocese of which Holy Name is a part.
