RE: George Washington Strawn, nephew of William H. Strawn, and grandson of patriot Richard Strawn
Since you and Margaret are cousins, I'll ask her to send you her number after her application is approved. She hasn't turned it in yet; after national genealogist receives the application may be end of year before Margaret receives her approved papers. Nice that DAR members can look up ancestors. However, we have to order the documentation and it's not cheap.
Do you connect to George Strawn?

Hi Sharon,
Just thought I'd let you know that Margaret Morring, your 5th or so cousin, finally found the info she needed to connect her George Strawn to his father Stephen so she can apply to DAR for membership on her patriot Richard.
Happy Researching!
Linda in Huntsville, AL
p.s. Someone in DAR chapter that she wants to join, was able to pull up the DAR application on George's brother William and there was the proof that William and George were brothers. So it follows that George was also the son of Stephen.
Margaret can also apply for membership in Daughters of 1812 on Stephen. Everything is coming together for her.

Shoshana Hawkins
Richard Strawn-we are related
Hello and good day Ms. Sharon Hickok - My name is Shoshana Hawkins (maiden name is Coughlin).

I am trying to locate service records for my ancestor and 4th Great-Grandfather (and your 4th Great-Grandfather) who served in the Revolutionary War approx. 1783 - Richard Straughan (Strawn) born: 3/27/1761 in Chatham Co NC- he signed his name both ways on his discharge paperwork. I am having difficulty finding his Revolutionary War service records. His service is documented in the published, Strawn Genealogy compiled by Emmet Dee Strawn and published by J. Frank Strawn in 1965. I located your name by searching on the website for the Ledbetter Cemetery records, where he is buried.

My 3rd Great-Grandfather is James Strawn (B 1786 or 1788), son of Richard and Lucy Poe (who is also buried in the Ledbetter Cemetery). My 2nd Great-Grandfather is Milton Strawn (son of James Strawn). My Great-Grandfather is James Tilman Strawn (son of Milton Strawn who married Sarah Rebecca Kilpatrick). James and Sarah had a daughter named, Maude Zena Strawn (my Grandmother-B: 1889). Maude Zena Strawn married George Tomas Mock, they had nine children, one of their two daughters was my Mother, Margaret Lorain Mock (married William Patrick Coughlin).

I am starting the process to join the DAR, so I am hopeful you can help me. I have never searched ancestor records before, so if you can point me in the right direction.

Not sure of our exact relationship, a cousin 4 times removed? I look forward to hearing back from you and beginning a friendship, even if by email communication.

I tried your email address, but the email came back undeliverable.

Samuel Hickcox (1712-17790
Hi Sharon,

I am Samuel's 6th great grandson, direct descendant of his son Asher. I believe he might be buried Old North Cemetery, Bristol, CT. There is a record there for a Samuel Hickcox, age 66, who died February 24, 1779. It seems to agree with his probate record, that is now online through Ancestry.

Thanks for putting up this virtual grave.

George W. Strawn
Sharon, I just took a peek at Margaret's DAR application and noticed that George W. Strawn died in Giles Co., not McNairy. Lived there for awhile but moved to Giles Co., date unknown, and is buried there. Not sure which town.
Hoping there is a family Bible record that goes back to at least 1850's.

Linda Maples

Reference my previous msg to you.

George Washington Strawn, nephew of William H. Strawn, and grandson of patriot Richard Strawn
Hi Sharon,
I am helping a friend Margaret Strawn Morring try to prove her 4th great grandfather George Washington Strawn's connection to his father Stephen who was a brother of William H. Strawn. Her 4th GG George W. Strawn was buried in Giles County, TN. He died in 1898. His grandfather Richard Strawn was a Rev. War patriot, b. NC, d. Hardin Co., TN.
She has applied for membership in the DAR; however her application was returned because she did not have enough info to connect her George Strawn to his father Stephen Strawn. She said Stephen was like the black sheep of the family and had several 'wives' scattered among several states. Though his children by first wife Elizabeth Brownlow mostly stayed in TN.
Stephen's son, George W. married an Eleanor Hewitt/Hawitt.
Don't know how but it appears that you and Margaret are cousins - her connection to patriot Richard Strawn is through son Stephen and yours I think is through oldest son William H.
Do you know of anyone who has info considered primary documentation on children of Stephen Strawn to include son George Washington Strawn?
Or know of anyone who can research in McNairy Co., Tn (George died in Adamsville) and/or Hardin Co., where Richard is buried.
Basically need to check to see if Richard left a will that might have listed his grandchildren. Since Stephen was known to have left the family to head to Arkansas, Margaret's thought is that Richard might have named his grandchildren in his will.
Margaret said Richard received a few pension payments before he died so there may have been small tokens for each grandchild.
Hoping someone in your family can point us in right direction to get the proof Margaret needs for DAR.
Thx so much,
Linda Alcott Maples

Sharon, Thank you so much for calling the incorrect year of death to my attention. The headstone plainly says 1918. I sent a note to Linda so hopefully she can get it corrected soon. Thanks again, Tommye
