I do believe I am your cousin. My great grandmother was Bertha Devereux and I believe her sister married a Powers. I did receive a large bunch of information; maybe form you, a number of years ago.

I am wondering about which "MEN OF MARK IN SOUTH CAROLINA" has the extended version of what you included on Nicholas Devereuxs page. I assume, or hope, that there is more information than what was included.

Thanks Mary for letting me know the relationship of Sarah to her step son Stephen Elliott. Would you happen to know where Sarah is buried?

Anastasia & Simon Fogarty
Mary, can I ask how you are related to Anastasia Fogarty (1798-1870) and Simon P Fogarty (1842-1914)? My wife (Amy Fogarty McCleary)is her G-G-Grand daughter and his G-Grand daughter. We would love to know if there is a relationship between you two. Do you have a Ancestry account? We all have copies of the original painting done of his mother Anastasia in our homes, and I could send you a copy for your Find A Grave account if you wanted.

RE: charles b jenkins
One of the issues is that there at have been two Charles B Jenkins in Rebel Troops.

Was hoping this might be your family line and that you'd know where gravestone might be. Because it looks flat to the ground in the picture, I'm wondering if it may have been covered by leaves. I'll keep looking.

Mary, I am trying to physically locate this stone at St Johns Epis on Johns Island. Would you email me so we can discuss?

I too descend from Jenkins and many other LowCountry lines but am trying to prove which CBJ this was as far as military records.

RE: Joseph Atkinson
I neglected to mention as well - Jeremiah Atmar Yates's mother, Sarah Atmar, was the daughter of Ralph Atmar and Elizabeth Freer. Elizabeth Freer's parents were Sarah Legare (b c. 1695) and Solomon Freer. Sarah Legare's brother was Francois Solomon Legare (1703-1774 - my Gx7 G-pa) and he was the father of Solomon Legare who I mentioned on my last message (Solomon Legare was the father of Elizabeth Legare who was the grandmother of Harriet and Mary - one of your Great G-ma's.)

RE: Joseph Atkinson
Hello again! :o] Yes, it does sound as though we're related. jeremiah's page on Geni is at and I'm the manager of his page there. His parents were Joseph Yates Sr (who was apparently a ship's carpenter)and Sarah Atmar. After Joseph's death she married John Rogers. Joseph and Sarah definitely had Joseph Yates Jr. and Jeremiah Atmar Yates, but I've found mixed sources about them having a daughter named Sarah Yates as well (who married Bethel Threadcraft). I've found more in favor of her being their daughter than not, but admit I've not found solid source evidence confirming that she truly was their daughter and not someone else's. On my tree also are Elizabeth Legare (my Gx5 G-ma) and her father, Solomon Legare (my Gx6 G-pa). I show that Elizabeth was Harriet Angeronia Air's grandmother (the mother of James - Harriet's father) so we might have a blood link as well as a marriage link in our trees. Do you have a tree on Geni? If you join (a basic membership is free) feel free to reach me via Jeremiah's page link shown above and I can send you an invite to view our tree that way, or if you have a tree there we can merge them via our common ancestor (Mary Eugenia Air and her sister, Harriet) and then you would have full visibility to my tree there. I just created a page for Mary at, so if you build a tree from you to her we could then merge the two pages for her. My personal email is if you wnat to email me directly. :o]

RE: Joseph Atkinson
P.S. You and I might be distant relatives somehow. I'm a "Yates" by birth but have many of the Charleston families on my tree as well. I live in Seattle, but my dad's "Yates" line is from Charleston. Jeremiah (mem# 67745925) is my GGGG Grandfather. His dad, Joseph Yates Sr., was a Revolutionary War soldier there. My family tree is on :o]

RE: Joseph Atkinson
If you click on the photo of each death notice I listed the source info. I'm very fortunate in that my local public library has free access to America's Geneaology Bank, as it's a subscription based service to the general public. If you ever want or need someone looked up for an obit or death notice in it, please don't hesitate to ask. I'm very happy to assist. :o]

RE: Clara Jane (Dennis) Devereux
Mary, I can't remember the memorial. Can you tell me what the date of death was and the exact name or memorial #? The only Clara Deveruex I found died in 1913, so that can't be the obit I talked about.

RE: Samuel
Mary, I also haven't been able to find him after 1880, but shall keep working on him. Have tried GenealogyBank for anything in an old newspaper, Family Search, the LDS website, Ancestry, of course, and Fold 3, formerly (they have some Texas Death Certificate images online but are only 64% complete, so I'll check back. But so far nothing has turned up. Jane

Mary, Thanks for transferring Elizabeth! I promise to take good care of her. Also, the dates on the Samuel Spotts memorial have been corrected. Jane

RE: Harriet
Mary, I linked Samuel Spotts #53054891 to Harriett a short while ago. I noticed that there are errors in dates in the birth and death fields, different from what I have and different from what is on the monument. I think the person entering the data simply entered it wrong. When you have a chance, check it out. I'll put a note on my "to do" list for the contributor of the memorial to make corrections and hopefully, he will. Also, there is a second Major Samuel Spotts, #24050523, which I think is a duplicate; the dates on this memorial are what I have, and agree with the monument. I can't really link Harriett to this one because then it would appear that she had two husbands with the same name! Any thoughts? Jane

RE: Memorial Transfer Request
Mary, thanks so much for the transfer! Doug is descended from George C. Clitherall and Caroline Elizabeth Burgwyn's youngest child, their son, Alexander Barron Clitherll, who married Catherine Grigg Hayes; then through their daughter, Allie Barron Clitherall who married George Anthony Birch; next, through their daughter Katherine Clitherall Birch who married Dudley Bates Lawrence; their son, George Douglas Lawrence married Elisabeth Reynolds Lieb and then you have my husband, George Douglas, Jr. We were very lucky that my faather-in-law had bound copies of Caroline Burgwyn's diaries, and we were given all 3 volumes when he died. You're so right, absolutely fascinating reading. If you have set up memorials for any of the above folks and would like to transfer, keep me in mind! And if you have any questions on this part of the family, please feel free to ask! Jane

Sarah (Burrows) Thompson: 76315214
Yes, there is quite a bit of info on this line in the bible. I have added Sarah and her husband and their daughter Mary and some of her family to Find A Grave along with the information I have from the Burrows-Thompson bible and also from Rosa's book. You should be able to follow the family links to find everything.

I also added what you wrote me about Michael to his memorial: 76317932, giving you credit with a link to your profile page. If you have any additional information you would like me to add, I will be happy to do so.

Are you descended from this family through Mary Cecilia (Thompson) Hersant?
Best regards,

Simon Fogarty
Mary, I am searching for my G-Grandfather, Simon Fogarty. He was b. in Ireland. Married to Elizabeth Brown. In 1860 census, they were living in Danforth, Washington, Maine. They had four children, John F., Timothy, William and Annie. He went into the Civil War in 1864... I cannot find him since then. I am wondering and hopeful that your Simon and mine are one and the same. In a census from CA., Elizabeth states that she is a widow.
I would love to hear your side of this saga...
Thank you... Emma O'Brien
