RE: GEN Paul Malone
Sorry for the confusion, see # 49253052. The photo of the headstone does not match the memorial.

GEN Paul Malone
The photo for Gen Malone does not match his name or dates of birth and death. The headstone photo is of someone named Mahoney. just a friendly FYI.

Would you mind transferring Find A Grave Memorial# 134142924 to me (#47451313)? Al Woods was my great uncle.

RE: Shewan Family
Hi Gerald,
We corresponded almost exactly a year ago regarding the Shewan Family. I am descended from a Shewan family in Longside, Aberdeenshire.

As you have noticed I have recently added two Shewan memorials, one at Keith-hall and the other at St Peter's cemetery in Aberdeen. With regard to the latter, there are more Shewans in that cemetery but it is quite large and I still having to finish adding the photos which I have.

Possessions of deceased
I noticed that you provided a picture for Lt. General George Franklin Good Jr. I am trying to find his family. I found some personal possessions in his wifes parents friends attic that belong to them. Lots of pictures of his wife Jessie Garrison as a girl growing up on academy grounds during the teens etc..

Kelly Perazzolo
Jane Shewan at Sydeham Cemetery (Christchurch, NZ)

I was at her burial location yesterday - her grave is unmarked (strip of grass).

I haven't been able to find exactly her plot but I took this photo of the block - most of them are unmarked. (Photo taken at 4333'31.1"S 17237'28.5"E). She is the only Shewan buried in the Christchurch City Council area.

She doesn't appear on the NZ Death Index however there's a grave in Timaru, NZ with the inscription Jane Shawan 1844 - 1909 and while there are 2 people buried in this plot she isn't one of them. The date of death is the same - Aug 14, 1909.

I think I know what happened here - most of the people who are buried in this Block were patients who died at Sunnyside Hospital ( so I believe she was a patient there at the time of her death and possibly that the hospital wasn't aware that her husband was buried in Timaru so she was buried by herself in the local cemetery.

I hope this makes sense.

She and her husband James had the following children

Catherine (Born April 1875)
William Shewan (Born 1878)
John Shewan (Born 1882)
Henry Shewan (1886 - 1938) (Buried in the Timaru plot)

Have also found the following death notice in the local newspaper, dated February 1897

"SHEWAN. At the Timaru Hospital, on February 28th, Christina, the beloved daughter of James and Jane Shewan, aged 24 years. Deeply regretted. "

"SHEWAN - The friends of James and Jane Shewan, are respectfully informed that the funeral of their late daughter, Christina, will leave their residence, High Street, Tomorrow, (Sunday) February 28th, at 2.30pm for the cemetery. "

Christina would have been born in abt 1873, before they arrived in NZ, hence why she isn't showing up on the NZ Birth Index. She is buried in a plot next to her brother and father. She is also buried with W.Shewan (Her brother?)

At first glance there are many Shewan's buried in Timaru

I hope this helps.

I am very excited to see that you found the graves of the Stormo patriarch and matriarch. My line leads to Helmer, and my inability to link the family because I could not find Hemming and Berit was driving me crazy. Well done, sir.

One or two of his children were transferred to me by photo volunteers. I will transfer them to you, except for Helmer. There's a very interesting connection with this branch of the family and I hope to have a meeting this summer with ones whose lives they touched.

Gladys's ashes lie next to those of her husband Robert. His photo is included on Gladys's memorial page. There are 3 others that I have photos for:

Alexander P
Hannah Maude (wife of above)
Lurline Ann

Let me know if you want me to email them to you.

Robert Leslie Shewan
I found an IOOF pendant belonging to Robert Leslie Shewan dated June 30, 1932.
I know that Robert Leslie died in 1974 and his wife died in 1991; they had no children.

I would like to return the pendant to a family member.
I live in Vancouver, Canada.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You're very welcome. It was a joy going through St Mary's. By the way I also found a Peter McMenaman in section East and made a memorial for him.

Shewan/Perry Family Tree
Berneice Shewan
I have been UN-successful finding my Great Aunt Berneice M. Shewan's burial /grave information.

She is the Daughter of Levi/Levy Shewan B 1880 D 1952. From Guelph, Ontario CA. immigrated to Niagara Falls, N.Y. I found Berneice's name spelled so many different ways. Bernice, Berenice. Including M. Bernice Shewan. Her birth year varies from 1913 -1915. The most confusing thing is her marriage to Arthur B. Gilman in Oct. 3 1931. He also married another Bernice Babbit. Last record I can find on my Great Aunt a Census in 1933. she was 18 living with parents Levi and Elizabeth Shewan 171 56th street, N.F., N.Y. I also know Berneice M. Shewan was in the Navy. She did pass at a young age. I would appreciate your help. thank you Linda Perry Henry Shewan/Perry Family Tree.

RE: Shewan Gravesites
You are very much welcome.
Since Hilda's name is not on the stone and there is room for two on the stone, I can't help but think her husband must be with her.
The staff at the cemetery were very helpful and may be able to confirm that her husband is there also.
Rather than asking if he is there, I would suggest emailing them to ask for his location. Cristina was one if the people we were in contact with. Her email is

I'll get you the location information that they have me for Hilda as well. I'm not sure if I added it to the online profile or not.

If he does happen to be in a different section let me know and I will gladly go over and look for the stone for a picture for you.
Let me know if there is any way for me to help!

I too have been lucky to have someone fulfill my request and go the extra mile for me. I recently had a request for England fulfilled (to the extent they were able to) and they send me several other family members in the same cemetery. It has opened up a whole new chapter of my family. I can only hope to make others as happy and grateful as I felt for my volunteer!

Grave photos
I saw your grave photo request for Hilda Shewan. I was there today looking and was unsuccessful in finding a marked stone, however found 2 stones.
1 stone had the names Charles and Elsie, the other stone only has the last name.
I will be contacting the office to have them tell me if Hildas stone does or does not have her name on the stone, and if I missed it I plan to return to gather the correct photo.
If you are interested in either of the photos I did gather, please contact me at and I will send you the photos directly.

Good luck with your searching!

RE: Elizabeth Shewan Hodge
I prefer not to put the pictures on the site that 'anonymous' has because she has no connection to the family. She just copies obits out of the local newspaper. As you have a family connection it should stay with you. You should ask her to delete her entry. The rules for findagrave state that there are to be no names of living people and the obits that she copies all have living peoples names in them.
