Obituary in local newspaper...

Wallace Murrel Thomas
By Contributor
From page A2 | July 30, 2014 |
Sept. 13, 1927 — July 19, 2014

Camino resident Wallace Murrel Thomas passed away peacefully into the arms of the Lord at his home in the early morning hours of Saturday, July 19, 2014, at the age of 86. Wally was the former superintendent and a faculty member of the Camino Union School District, a local Apple Hill organic fruit grower, inspirational writer and longtime health enthusiast.

Born in Riverside, Calif., on Sept. 13, 1927, Wally graduated from San Bernardino High School in 1945 and began a gymnasium and fitness business in 1949. He married Marilyn Conforti in 1952 and in that same year was drafted into the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict and served until the completion of his military duty in 1955. In 1960, he graduated from Los Angeles State University with a bachelor’s degree in education and then a master’s degree in education in 1964.

In 1965, Wally and Marilyn moved with their family to Camino, Calif., where they purchased acreage in Apple Hill, growing both apples and pears. After teaching for one year at Edwin Markham Middle School in Placerville, he joined the teaching faculty at Camino in 1966. He became principal/superintendent at Camino in 1968 and returned to the classroom as an upper grades teacher in 1979 before retiring from education in 1996. He continued as an organic grower in Apple Hill until the time of his passing and supplied outlets in the Sacramento and Davis markets. He also authored an inspirational book on Christian doctrine titled “The Teachings of Jesus Christ in His Own Words” which has impacted the lives of many.

Wally is survived by his wife, Marilyn; four children, Tani Nauman, Tami McShane, Kenny Thomas and Terrie Sutton; eight grandchildren, Josh Reddin, Brandon Nauman, Daniel Sutton, Eric Sutton, Austin Sutton, Kylie McShane, Katy Thomas and Kloe Thomas; and two great-grandchildren, Cajmere Sutton and Jade Sutton.

A public memorial service will be held at 6:30 p.m., on Friday, Aug. 1, at the west gymnasium amphitheater on the Campus of Camino School located at 3060 Snows Road in Camino (95709). In lieu of flowers please make donations in Wally’s name to the Camino School Track Maintenance Fund by visiting the school office or mailing to the above address.

RE: talk abt Ora (Stull) Malone
Hey Robert. I wanted to let you that I found a divorce record on ancestry for Sidney Willet and Ora. They divorced on 10 Jul 1919.

Also there is a death certificate for Hugh Norton that shows he froze to death in Garfield Twp., Kalkaska, Michigan. Traverse City area in November... brrrr.

Sad, sad life Ora had. After gathering the last name Willets from you, I found her in Genesee Co., MI 1920 census working as a saleslady in a dry goods store. So she was at least in the same county as her children.

Hi Robert,

I don't control that memorial any more. Can you go to the memorial and hit the edit tab and then go to the relationships section and add the link?

Sorry about that but I've given away most of my memorials and can't edit them anymore.

I know my cousin is busy right now. And if nothing else I will get it when I go back for my class reunion in 2018. Thomas is not going anywhere, I'm sure he will wait. What about you?

I've always been in the family.

I've seen Karen's updated file copy version on Mahan's obituary. But I got my information from the obituary published in the Freeport Daily Journal on 23 Jan 1911 and the funeral info on 25 Jan 1911. That's why I was waiting to see what was on the headstone.

If you want to go with the other date go ahead.

Since you have been researching the Thomas's, are there any in Iowa. Mary kept going over there to see relatives but I have not found any.

Thomas Mahan was the second husband of Mary Moody Wittbecker, my gggrandmother. Whose grandparents were Thomas's. Are you a relative. Trying to get my cousin to check on the tombstone. Not at my computer right now so don't have the Obituary handy. But I got all the info off the Obit. I remember it said that his brother handled the funeral arrangements. Mary had three children when they got married, but they did not have any together. When I get back to my computer I'll look it up.

Hope your summer is going well...Ours is so hot! too many days of 85+ degrees, and humidity! weird weather

Added Helen Vera Fry to the list of children.

Helen's Find A Grave record #73322032. She is buried in the Oak Hill Cemetery in Story County, also known as Johnson's Grove Cemetery.

I sent the record owner links to Helen's parents, as well as corrections for the dates of birth and death. Hopefully, see will be reunited with her parents electronically, as she is in heaven.

RE: talk abt Ora (Stull) Malone
Thanks Robert for the additional information. We knew she was married three times but did not know the 2nd husband's name. I had also the wrong Hugh written down.

I knew about Harold but was unsure of Arvilla. I saw the two Norton children in the 1920 census for the Childs Welfare Society of Flint as inmates and wondered if Arvilla was Ora's child too. I don't know if Ora abandoned the kids or if she just couldn't care them for a period of time and placed them in an orphanage.

Considering her mother died in 1906 when she was 12 and she married Hugh in 1908 when she was 14. Had her two children at 16 and 17 years old and was then widowed with two infants by 1911. It is amazing she did as well as she did.

Her brother Ralph was my great grandfather and he was shuttled around between sister's homes after their mother died.
