RE: ROOSEVELT MEMORIAL GARDENS-CHESAPEAKE
Mike THANK YOU SO MUCH. I was afraid you might ask that. I retired in 2009 and left the area without ever visiting his headstone. F*A*G was not on my radar yet. Oddly, one of my wife's best friends husband, Mike Kirsch, used to manage the office there but he is retired, also. Sorry, you would have to check at the office I believe is on the left as you enter the Cemetery from Military Hwy, than Campostella. Please don't make a special trip, just if you are out for a Sunday drive and it takes you to the Crestwood section of Chesapeake. Thank you for your service.

ROOSEVELT MEMORIAL GARDENS-CHESAPEAKE
Mike, since I saw your offer. I have been trying to get a photo of a good buddy of mine from NNSY. My wife and I lived in Chesapeke for 30+ years and retired to the Great Smoky Mountains. The request I have for JOHN MILTON JAMES @ Roosevelt Memorial Gardens in Chesapeake has gone unanswered. If and when you get time, I would be grateful.

Abingdon African American Cemetery
Mike,

I communicated via e-mail with the Historical Society of Washington County, Virginia, and this is what they said about the Abingdon Negro/Colored/African American Cemetery in Abingdon, VA: "The cemetery section you are referring to is part of Sinking Spring Cemetery. It was once owned by Sinking Spring Presbyterian Church. One of our members wrote the deed when ownership of the cemetery was transferred from the church to the town. Sinking Spring is now owned and maintained by the town of Abingdon. The main section of Sinking Spring is on the west side of Russell Road while the ‘colored’ section is on the east side of Russell Road. As far as we know, there is no “Abingdon Negro Cemetery” or “Abingdon African American Cemetery”. They are probably referring to this section of Sinking Spring. I hope this helps clear up the confusion.

Carol Hawthorne-Taylor

Office Coordinator"

I transferred all of my memorials from the Abingdon Negro Cemetery to the Sinking Spring Cemetery in Abingdon, VA, thus eliminating many duplicate grave sites.

RE: Latta
a latta family website lists her maiden name as part of section on John Ewing Latta:
"m. Catherine Van Voorhies of Philadelphia, Pa., daughter of John and Mary H. Van Voorhies, April 9, 1805."
http://www.latta.org/Branches/Branch%208.htm

There are many variant spellings of the name, many Van Voorhis or VanVoorhis.

Their son James McKnight Latta is my gr gr grand uncle. I found a Philadelphia marriage record for his grandparents:
John Van Vorhis m. Mary McKnight on 31 May 1781.
The name is very unique, the McKnight matches James' middle name, and the time period/place matches.

It's fine if you decide this is not good enough info to add the surname to your record, just trying to help with family genealogy.

Abingdon African American Cemetery
Hello Mike!

I've been scratching my head about three cemeteries in Abingdon, Virginia: Sinking Spring Cemetery, Abingdon Negro Cemetery, and Abingdon African American Cemetery. I have been trying to research Abingdon Negro Cemetery through Virginia Death Certificates and a grave index from the Historical Society of Washington County, Virginia. I believe that Abingdon Negro Cemetery and your Abingdon African American Cemetery are the same cemetery. That said, there are duplicate grave sites in all three cemeteries. Is the Abingdon Negro Cemetery located in or near Sinking Spring Cemetery? I have family members who are buried in the Abingdon Negro Cemetery, and their death certificates clearly state: "Abingdon Colored Cemetery". I am just trying to straighten out the situation for research purposes. Can you help? Also, just to add to the confusion, there is a cemetery in Abingdon called "Taylor Hill Cemetery" or "Taylor's Hill Cemetery" that may be the same as the Abingdon Negro Cemetery, but I haven't been able to find any information on it online. Again, do you know anything about this cemetery? Thanks in advance.

William E. Webber
William E. Webber was the son of John Webber and Lucy Ann P. Dole. (Virginia, Select Marriages, 1785-1940; 1850 Census, Norfolk, Norfolk (Independent City), Virginia; Roll: M432_964; Page: 104A.) He married Eliza Jane Hodges on 22 Jun 1859 in Norfolk County, Virginia (Virginia, Select Marriages, 1785-1940), which gives the name of his parents, and Eliza's parents.
In the 1900 Census, Portsmouth Ward 2, Portsmouth City, Virginia; Roll: 1737; Page: 10A.), he gives his month and year of birth as Nov 1835, he is widowed with a servant, Annie E. Williams (black) also living at his home. On the 4 Apr 1902, in (Newport News, Virginia, Daily Press Obituary Index, 1898-1988), there is a publication with his obituary. William was retired from the U. S. Navy. I have been unable to locate his wife.
Thank you,

Jim Richmond
CPO Halvorsen
Please transfer management of this memorial, #66384557, to me, Jim Richmond. Sverre is my wife's great grandfather. Btw, his given name was misspelled on the marker. I have researched his family, found living relatives in Norway, started a Facebook group, and published a booklet on the family. I would like to write a proper memorial for him with several photos and maintain it. I live in VA Beach and intend to visit the grave site in the next month. Also, understand that since the marker is over 50 years old and a national monument it would not be possible to correct his given name or replace the marker. Do you know of any way it could be corrected or replaced?

Joynes Cemetery
Dear Sir;
I do not wish to complicate things for you, but the listings you have in Joynes Cemetery in Onley, the cemetery is actually located In the out skirts of Onancock, I have individuals that I was adding and noticed this little abnormality. Some of the listings that I am adding are related to those you have listed. I suppose we could just leave them as they are and I will add mine as the ONley cemetery.

Could this be Hannah Demaline - daughter of Thomas Demaline (93325470) and Ann Pears (93325488). There is a John Dimilin (42026034 or (derivitive of Demaline also buried here - which appears to fit with the family?

Thomas and Ann had 5 children:
Hannah - I think that is 72260210
James -

RE: Unknown CSA
Per Find A Grave policy: their last name is not CSA and therefor should not be CSA in the last name field.

For unknowns the word Unknown is often placed in the first name field or the last name field so that in the event of a search of the cemetery all unknowns will appear together in the search results. (Placing unknown seems to be approved by the administrators of the site unlike CSA or C.S.A.)

Also C.S.A. sometimes tends to mess with the search features.

Outdated photo
Mike,

Memorial for Dorothea M Harris at Albert G. Horton Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery, Suffolk (memorial 48162353) contains an outdated photo you posted. It appears her husband has now died and a new stone was placed with his name on the front and hers on the rear of the stone. You may want to consider deleting your photo since it no longer represents what exists at that cemetery.

Thanks for all you have done at this cemetery. I have bumped into your name often.
