Hi, I am the Genealogy Clerk for the Covington, Indiana Public Library. I recently found a journal written by the mother of Harry Hicks (Mary Ella Sloan) when she was 17 years old and enrolled in the Seminary School for females in Crawfordsville, Indiana. This journal was written in 1852/1853. I am looking for more information on the Hicks family so that I may add to the journal. If you have more information on Mary Ella or Frank Hicks, I would appreciate your help to preserve their memory. As of yet, I have been unable to trace their grave sites or much of their life- except for their marriage record and an 1880 census. Thank you! Cindy Keeling Franklin e-mail: genealogy@c-vpl.org

I noticed the Find A Grave memorial you created for Kimberley Michelle Goad Noski. She is also in my maintained family history. Is the obituary text you posted for Kimberley her complete obituary? If not, could you send me her complete obituary to:

James E. White, Co. K, 86th Illinois
Bruce, I hope this little message finds you well. I think at one time someone sent me a copy of the obituary of James E. White, of Co. K. If they did, I lost it. Is it possible that among your collection of obits that there is a copy of the obit of James E. White, who died on May 26, 1922? If you have one, or ever find one, would it be possible for you to send me a scan of it? Thanks, Baxter

Hi Bruce,

You requested a photo for this veteran, I believe the memorial is a duplicate of William Gerald Lucey # 932819 as the dates and location are the same. There also is a photo on LT COL Lucey's memorial page.

Thanks

I like to read old newspapers (Library of Congress website) and to match the stories/articles I find to the memorials on Find A Grave. I believe I have found an article authored by Rabbi Zielonka in the El Paso Hearld for 10/7/1916.

Thought you might find this interesting.

H. E. Rast
Minnie Rast
Dear Mr. Hicks,
The information you inserted regarding Minnie Rast in the Prairie Lea cemetery is incorrect. I know from personal and family history. The maiden name of Minnie Rast was Rast. She is listed in the 1880 census in Enumeration District 150 for Washington County. She never married until the summer of 1881 when she wed Carl Neuhaus. This was a "shotgun" wedding since my grandfather Gus was born a few weeks later on Aug 9, 1881. The death certificate of Gus Rast, the son of Minnie. indicates the father of Gus Rast was Carl Neuhaus.
As for Carl, he disappeared, probably back to Germany. The death certificate of Minnie Rast is incorrect. Gus Rast was my grandfather and I lived with him in Brenham and I was with him when he died in November 1952.
For a cross reference you can find the Grave of Gus Rast in the Austin City Memorial Park and his death certificate is also available online.
Please correct your contribution or remove it entirely.

Hi Bruce,

The marker for George W. Hicks in the Belvidere Cemetery has George's birth and death dates as 1871 and 1958, which is very different than the memorial you have. His spouse is Carrie A. 1873 -1941. I have entered a separate memorial under George W. with the dates that are on the marker and included the photo of the marker. Are they the same person?

RE: RASTS
Hi, Bruce - we're certainly in agreement. The crazy thing is that I can get contributors I don't know, who live nowhere near here to transfer to me more easily than local people. My family has been here since the 1800's and my father was a history buff who knew all the local lore and had a great memory for it. I was his little buddy and interested as well. I have a lot to offer on very, very many of the local people --whereas these contributors are voraciously gobbling up the memorials, will NOT accept any stories or info I have on the people I've known and/or heard about all my life. They won't transfer my Mothers own sisters to me and I have so very much to add, interesting stories to offer and no one cares or is interested. A lot is already gone and with people like me who have info not being allowed to give it, all will soon be gone. They create what I call sterile memorials!!

Like you said, I could go on and on but it's pretty much all to no avail. The lives of these people were important --were worth more than just being a statistic and data in print. The legend and lore of my small community and the many things I know about Waco people and their history, the interesting tidbits that I can tell are going to be lost, and families and interested people are just left without the knowledge and stories they hunger for. You DO realize there are many, many things I don't dare put in print --some of the fun stuff that you can only pass down verbally. ;-) But I DO keep trying and add what I can when the opportunity comes. So many want quantity not quality as the cliche goes. Keep the faith ! Nancy

RE: RASTS
Thanks, Bruce - that's very nice of you to say so. It was really a special experience knowing her and I feel fortunate to have been friends with them in spite of the age difference. But they were sort of forever young. I'm going to write something for Libba (Elizabeth) as well and talk about their father who was very special. I really appreciate the transfers because I do have something to offer on them that otherwise might never have been shared. Happy Trails, Nancy

Is it possible to add informaiton related to a deceased post on Find A Grave that would give the names of the deceased children? If so, I have information I can give for one of the postings for Earl E. Fayle that was posted by Bruce Hicks.

Samuel Reed - Lucas - Sarah - Ora - Helen -(one more) - me

When my grandma passed, I bought everything that I could at the estate sale. I have lots of old family pictures, and I believe one of them is Emerson. In addition, I managed to save the Reed family bible, and Emerson is specifically mentioned in the notes. I'm going to Root cemetery in a few days to get some pictures.

I am posting a generic email to contact me at since I'm not sure if all these messages are public.
