I am a Vermont Civil War buff, and am working on a project to identify the last resting places of many of our "old soldiers' that had ties to. Vt. Luther P; Whetherby is one such soldier.May I ask you to use the photo that you contributed to his Find A Grave Memorial, to be posted on the You would receive credit for this.

Thank you for your consideration.
Deanna French

Note. Luther was born March 20,1834 in Jericho, Vt. He was a Surgeon in the 15th Kentucky Infantry during the Civil War. ( college CMS (57))
Some records suggest he was born in Williston, which is very close to Jericho, so a common indifference.

Jack, If you are at the Middletown Cemetery again, could you take a photo and add an memorial for Cornelia Ruth (Connie) Guthrie. She was the wife of Blaine Allen Guthrie Jr. and the mother of Beth Guthrie. There are memorials for Blaine and Beth you have already created.

GUTHRIE, CORNELIA RUTH "CONNIE," 83, died on October 14, 2012, of complications from a stroke.

She was born in Middletown, KY, on July 17, 1929, to Sherman and Mary (nee Gamble) Wetherby.

She graduated from Jeffersontown High School and earned her bachelor's and master's degrees from the University of Kentucky and Catherine Spaulding University, respectively. She taught general science and biology in public and private high schools in Jefferson County. She later administered and interpreted psychological tests for students, primarily in southern Indiana.

For more than 20 years, she volunteered with the American Red Cross, helping with disaster relief across the South and Midwest. She also was a volunteer water safety instructor.

Mrs. Guthrie was a historical reenactor, giving presentations on the lives of Peggy Chenoweth, one of the early pioneer women of Jefferson County, who survived a scalping the same year that George Washington became president, and of seamstress Betsy Ross. She was active at Locust Grove.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 47 years, advertising executive and local historian, Blaine Allen Guthrie, Jr.; her daughter, Elizabeth Wetherby Guthrie, who died of measles and encephalitis at the age of five; and her brother Sherman Henry Wetherby.

Mrs. Guthrie is survived by her sister, Kathryn Elizabeth Guthrie, formerly of Middletown and now living in Columbia, MO; her elder son, Blaine Alan Guthrie, III, his wife, Mary Stewart and their daughter, Lindsey Michelle Guthrie, all of Delmont, PA; her younger son, Bruce Gamble Guthrie, his wife, Rebecca Whitlow Guthrie and their children, Elizabeth Ann Guthrie and Steven Woodward Guthrie, all of Maryland Line, MD; and several nieces and nephews.

She enjoyed her black CAT for three years. Nephew Henry Gamble Wetherby and niece Sue Ray (Guthrie) Morgan in particular provided love and invaluable assistance during her final health crisis.

Viewings will be held at 2-8 p.m. Wednesday, October 17, 2012 at Pearson Ratterman Brothers Funeral Home in Middletown. Interment will be at the Middletown Cemetery at 10 a.m. Thursday October 18, 2012. A memorial luncheon will be held at the Middletown Women's Club at noon Thursday, October 18, 2012.

The family asks that, in lieu of flowers, contributions be made to the Beth Guthrie Book Fund of the Louisville Free Public Library.

I went by looking for the cemetery and was unable to find it. Before I take up your time and "ask" to meet me somewhere, I will tell you what I found and maybe you can pinpoint me in the right direction. You mentioned that it was around the 8000 block. The part that confuses me is that there is (what looks like) an old church on the left and has 7900 as its address. I didn't see and houses in that particular area. Keep going straight up the hill until it ends at what looks like water treatment facility, but there are a few houses on the left and the woods are on the right down a hill. Did I pass it? Is there a place to pull off and park? And can it been seen from the road, or do I have to walk?

Yes, that is the one...I have been to Hillcrest (which had several Gagel's and Quillman's). I will try and find it tomorrow (Sunday) and if I don't have any luck, I might have to take you up on the offer and meet you.

Thank you for all your help,

RE: Quillman Hill Cemetery
The one in which the Gagel's and Quillman's are in. I hope this helps. I have found Risinger Cemetery (Bearcamp Rd), Hillcrest Cemetery (Manslick Rd), Shively Cemetery (Dixie Hwy), and Saint Andrew Cemetery (St. Anthony Rd, but I can't seem to find the Quillman Hill Cemetery.

I hope this tidbit of information can pinpoint which one.

Linda Horton
First wife of Robert Glass Vance
Dear Jack, thanks for your terrific work! FYI Robert Glass Vance was married twice. Your site mentions his 2nd wife, Harriet Hobbs, but not his first wife Mary Marders White, my 3rd great grandmother. She died at age 21 and had just one child, Mary Ruthann Vance Sprowl, my 2nd great grandmother, another first wife who died young--when my great grandfather Edwin Ruth Sprowl was just 3 weeks old (and Edwin's young first wife died when my grandmother was 18 days old; the good old days don't sound so good when you hear this.) Details on Mary White Vance and Mary Ruthann Vance Sprowl follow:

Birth 24 Nov 1805 in Middletown, Jefferson, Kentucky, United States
Death 5 Mar 1827 in Middletown, Jefferson, Kentucky, United States
Probably buried in the Middletown Cemetery

Birth 31 Jan 1825 in Middletown, Jefferson, Kentucky, United States
Death 27 Mar 1859 in Middletown, Jefferson, Kentucky, United States
Buried in the Jeffersontown Cemetery; she has a Find-a-Grave page with photos of her grave but not of her.

Ruth Glass Vance, Middletown Cem
Thanks for your helpful info on my prev. question. I requested a photo some time ago of Rev. James' grave...someone reported that they couldn't find him. Then I looked at listing and saw it said "Vault" and re-requested the photo, which request is still standing. Since you say there was one there in the Vance plot, I'd bet it is his. I appreciate you saying you would look for it. Back then, would they have buried two people in that one 'vault'? If not, she's probably beside him. Their dates of death were not that far apart..maybe 3-5 yrs.

Middletown Cemetery, Jefferson Co. KY
Do you know if an early list of the above cemetery exists?
I'm all but certain that Ruth Glass Vance is buried in this cemetery, yet the list of names, nor Findagrave, show her name. She was bn 1768 in VA, was 73 yrs at death, and d. 2 June 1841, Jefferson Co. KY; her husband, Rev. James Vance, d. about same time and is buried/listed there, as is two of her sons. Info that was above cemetery listing says some stones were worn and illegible. Could hers be one? Any help appreciated.
