Colma home of Peace Henry Levy
Henry Levy was my 2nd great grandfather. He died in 1872 not 1892 as listed on the Find-a -Grave site. This is confirmed in the San Francisco Chronicle . He was born 1819-1820 as suggested by his age at death, which would have been 73 years of age if your date was correct.
I have had the Hebrew translated. It incorrectly states that his father was Jonathan Levy. Thus I looked in London for Jonathan Levy for 12 years. The Times of London correctly lists Henry's death Dec 11, 1972 his father being Jonas not Jonathan. It appeared Feb 6, 1873.
Constance Grave was from St Thomas, West Indies. She was his wife but not my 2nd great grandmother.

Harrison Fitch
Hi Diane -

I am working on my Fitch genealogy and notice you have posted a picture of Harrison Fitch in Olivet Cemetery, Colma, CA. Along with the post is a picture of ShowFolks of America and a listing of quite a few people including Harrison.

I don't have Harrison in my database and am wondering if you can give me a bit of information. My Fitch family descends from Henry Delano Fitch and Josefa Carrillo. I also have Freshour, Rice and Grant.

Any help would be great.

Thanks,

Daniel McLeod & family
Hi Diane - I found your name on Find A Grave & would like to contact you. I am interested in your Memorial #37966908 for Daniel & Elizabeth McLeod buried near San Francisco, CA. Their daughter, Amy, is my special interest. Amy is also buried at Colma, CA with her spouse & their children who were all born in California

As a intermediate genealogist I am working on these line. Amy was married to William McDowell in Petaluma, Sonoma, CA in 1866.

I am searching for additional information about Daniel McLeod's arrival in California from Canada. I understand Daniel married Elizabeth in Rhode Island but I do not know when.

Thank you very much for any information about these lines. I thank you too for all the good work you do for Find A Grave.

Sincerely,
Joan Fraser

"John" Leary d. 1906
Hi Diane,
Happy New Year!

I saw "John" Leary, who is buried at Mt. Olivet. The Elizabeth Daily Journal has a limited number of years digitized. I found the obit for "John" and "John" is Johanna Leary whose obit is posted in the 18 August EDJ on the front page. If you google Elizabeth Daily Journal digitized you will be able to see the issue and the obit on the front page. She was the wife of John Leary. On another note, I found, on Ancestry, on the link to New York Emigrant Savings Bank an entry for Daniel Leary and his wife, Catherine as account holders. They give their address as "Elizabethport" and she is a McCarthy by birth. It gives immigration information, the ship, the dates and shows them as coming from Co. Cork. Please have a look if you're so inclined. I am of the opinion that all of OUR Leary's are related one way or the other. My only on-going problem is that I can't find the deaths of my John and Mary Donnell/McDonald Leary. I feel they died between 1895 and 1910. I would guess too that John and Mary are buried in that very large Leary plot at Mt Olivet. Please let me know what you think. Thanks a million. Greg

Charles Offer's Marker
Hi Diane,

I am involved in Jewish Genealogy and sometime ago, Stuart OFFER gave me part of the hand-written manuscript of Charles Offer's travelog back to Slovakia.

I would like to add your photo of his marker (ID #25488533) to this website, http://kehilalinks.jewishgen.org/huncovce/Huncovce-Other.htm, and you might enjoy reading his adventures that I transcribed!

Happy New Year,

Madeleine

RE: Leary's
After looking on F-A-G there is no doubt in my mind that all of these Leary's...yours and mine are related. The Michael D. Leary who died in 1911 and who is buried with Daniel Leary, Dennis McCarthy et al is the son of John Leary and Mary O'Donnell Leary. I think the "McDonald" name that you reported is a misnomer and the true maiden name for Mary Leary is "O'Donnell". Baptismal records from St. Pat's for some of the American-born Leary children of John and Mary show "Donnell or O'Donnell" Anyway...just filling some stuff in. Meanwhile, also on Find A Grave are the burials of brother and sister, Timothy Leary, 1952 and Ellen Leary, 1965. Also children of John and Mary. The grave was owned by Helen Sheehan, my James' Sheehan's daughter. Apparently, Tim and Ellen never married. I remember seeing Aunt Helen, as my mother called her, at my grandmother's wake in 1979...many moons ago.

RE: Leary's
Hi Diane,

I did a bit of research on Family Search and found out my immigrant Leary's are John and Mary O'Donnell Leary. I found that children James and Margaret(who would marry my James Sheehan) were born in England/Wales. Michael, Dennis, Timothy, Thomas, Ellen and James #2 were born in Elizabeth. James #1 must have died. So...with this being said, there is/was a possibility that there were marriages of these male Leary's and subsequent families whose descendants are alive today...somewhere. I'm going to check F-A-G to see if any of these people are in Mt. Olivet.

RE: Leary's
Hi Diane,

The nat papers should be at the NJ Archives in Trenton. I don't see an immediate connection but that doesn't mean that it's not there. I would be 99% sure that the Leary's were from Co. Cork. It is a very strong Cork name. Regarding the misspellings and different spellings of the name...when I started my maternal Connolly research, the name was spelled 17 different ways !! I'm still of the opinion that all of the Leary's in E'port were related and tangled with the Sheehan's and McCarthy's...again ALL very strong Cork names.

Back to the naturalization papers, the early nats offer very little information as to origins and the women naturalized with their husbands. I am thinking that some of these Leary men served in the civil war and if so, there should be a lot of information...some of it very detailed as to origins. Ancestry has a lot of military information.

Best,
Greg

RE: Leary's
Good Morning Diane,

I was wondering if you know if any of your Leary's were born in Wales/England as Maggie Leary Sheehan claims she was in the censuses?

I am guessing they left Cork to go to Wales for work in the coal mines.

I figure that if any of yours were born there then maybe that would point to brother/sister relationships.

Best,
Greg

RE: Leary's
Oh yes !!! I agree...we're related. I forgot to mention that my Leary's were also RR men, laborers, and that James Sheehan, later on, worked for the Eliz Public Works. I know that my father, now 92 and my deceased mother, whose mother was, Mary Cecilia Giles Connolly and later Rotunno, knew the Leary's as well.

RE: Leary's
Thanks.

They lived at Livingston St, sometimes at Pine St and Second Street E'port. The Sheehan's lived at these locations, too. I would guess they "shopped" the best rents and as the families grew they re-located as necessary.

RE: Leary's
Hi Diane,

Thanks. Yes...I'm very familiar with Family Search, it's a wonderful site. I've had experience through the years with St. Pat's. In the beginning they were very helpful but with change of status of the parish, change of staff and demographic of the area it's becoming more difficult to deal with them.

I was wondering if Maggie Leary, married to my great grand uncle James, was related to your Leary's. I have an idea that they are.

Best,
Greg

RE: The Leary's
Hi Diane,

Thanks so much for getting back to me. Another of my Sheehan's...Jeremiah, Sr was married to Mary McCarthy both are buried at St.Peter's Cem in Staten Island, BUT they lived and died in Elizabth. As my research moves along, I have come to see this connection with Jeremiah and his family and Denis Sheehan, father of my Ellen. I see the headstone on F-A-G for Daniel Leary, his wife and Dennis McCarthy and his wife, Margaret all in the same Leary plot. There are several others there as well. One big happy family these Sheehan, Leary's and McCarthy's. A lot of the Elizabeth Daily Journal early issues are now available by googling Elizabeth Daily Journal Digi-find. Issues up to 1915. I found a funeral announcement for Dennis McCarthy, 9 April 1899 and all of the Sheehan's, Jeremiah, Jeremiah, Jr and James Sheehan are pallbearers along with Timothy and John Leary. I am nearly certain that ALL of these folks are from the Skibbereen area of Co. Cork. Have you ever heard that? You may want to have a look at the EDJ link. Look forward to hearing from you again. Best, Greg

The Leary's
Hi Diane,

I hope all is well. You've photo'd graves for me before at Mt. Olivet, Newark. I notice that you're researching the Leary's of Elizabeth, NJ. I am closely related to this family via the Sheehan's with whom the Leary's lived. James Sheehan's wife was Margaret (Maggie) Leary Sheehan. I am interested because I think this family is also related to the McCarthy's of Elizabeth and West/New Brighton, Staten Island. James was the older brother of my great grandmother, Ellen Sheehan Giles.

Any help...much appreciated. Thanks a million. Looking forward to hearing from you.
