OZONA - Fred Vela Fierro, 50, was born on July 4, 1957, in Stanton, Texas, the son of the late Juan and Josephine Fierro. Fierro graduated from Ozona High School in 1975 and attended Angelo State University. Fierro worked for Western Geophysical before entering law enforcement completing 25 years of honorable service at the Crockett county Sheriff's Office. Fierro worked as a jailer, a juvenile officer, a patrol deputy and Captain before being appointed Chief Deputy. Fierro attained his Master's level of proficiency as a Jailer and Peace Officer from the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Officer Standards and Education. Fierro was a member of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church in Ozona and a member of the Knights of Columbus. Fierro was the ultimate example of a community police officer. He loved his family, friends and his pets, including those he brought home that no one else wanted. Fierro enjoyed fishing, camping and traveling. Fierro was the ultimate friend for many people throughout Ozona, Texas, and the United States, who seemed to always have a cousin to visit someplace. Fierro's dedication to his church, family and community was unlimited. Fierro met daily with his very beloved friends at the Cafe Next Door in Ozona for coffee and conversation. Fred Fierro is survived by his wife, Petra Hernandez; a brother, John Fierro of Ozona; niece, Nikki Fierro of San Angelo; sisters, Silvia Fierro Coy and husband Juan Coy, Stella Fierro Rodriquez and husband Abel Rodriquez, Dianna Fierro Montanez and husband Eliseo Montanez and Debbie Fierro Luna and husband Aureliano Luna Jr., all of Ozona. Fierro is also survived by a special cousin Sharon F. Martinez of San Angelo and many, many cousins, nieces and nephews who he truly loved. Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, April 2, at the Crockett County Convention Center with Father Rodney White officiating. Burial will follow in Lima Cemetery. Pallbearers will be R.J. Fierro, A.J. Montanez, Juan J. Coy, Mark Martinez, Joe Luna John Ray Luna, Victor M. Hernandez, Jr. and Juan Hernandez Jr. Honorary Pallbearers will be Billy Shane Fenton, Sheriff; Ron B. Hawthorne, Captain; Jimmy Wayne Gillit, Sergeant; Samuel G. Longoria, Deputy; Andrew Sanchez, Deputy; Raymond Larry Francis, Deputy; Emilio Tambunga, Jail Administrator; Emily Ramirez-Guerra, Jailer/Dispatcher; Erica Camp, Jailer/Dispatcher; John Stephen Kenley, Fire Marshall; Brooks Long, Texas Ranger; Mike Bullard, John L. Henderson, Craig Deaton, Weldon Maness, Dr. Marcus Sims, Ernesto Cavazos, Randy Branch, Mike Glover, Andy Wilson, Bruce James, Jimmy Hokit and Royce Newton.
