Death: Dec. 15, 2007

Robert E. Hatcher, 85, of Strum died Saturday, Dec. 15, 2007, at Crystal Lake Manor in Strum with his daughters at his side.

He was born June 26, 1922, in Minneapolis to Azro and Agnes (Larson) Hatcher.

On Jan. 20, 1946, he married Marion Halverson. They lived in Strum where they raised four daughters. Marion died Jan. 11, 2007.

Bob was a faithful member of Immanuel Lutheran Church of Strum and active in many community and area organizations. He is probably best remembered for his love of music, which he shared singing in his church choir, as a soloist for special occasions, and by leading the national anthem at athletic events for Eleva-Strum schools and the community for more than 50 years.

He served as a sergeant in the U.S. Army during World War II from January 1941 to September 1945. He was stationed in Africa and Italy.

Robert is survived by daughters, Gail (Mark) Perry of Baldwin, Gwen (William) Mensen of St. Paul, Colleen (David) Berge of Strum and Karla (James) Vriezen of Janesville; grandchildren, Bethany (Ronald) Heutmaker, Mark (Andria) Perry III, James Mensen, Eric (Amanda) Mensen, Jon Berge (fiancee, Denise Klubertanz), Michael (Emily) Berge, Laura Berge and Robert Vriezen; great-grandchildren, Hailey Mensen, Oliver Berge and Hope Heutmaker; sister, Marguerite Gibson, of Rogers, Minn.; sisters-in-law, Harriet Hatcher of Peoria, Ariz., and Violet Hatcher of Plymouth, Minn.; and nieces, nephews and other relatives.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Marion; his parents; brothers, Earl "Bill" and George; brothers-in-law, Ernst Gibson and Harold Halverson; and nephews, James Gibson and Ronald Halverson.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 18, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Strum with the Rev. Christine Emerson officiating. Burial will be at West Beef River Cemetery in rural Strum. The flag will be presented by Strum VFW Post 6550. Taps will be played by his grandson Jon Berge.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at Immanuel Lutheran Chapel in Strum, and for one hour before services Tuesday at the church.
